Many organizations offer great opportunities to volunteer with animals in your local community. For example, the Montgomery County SPCA in Missouri operates an animal rescue that is entirely dependent on volunteers for all of it's services. Volunteers who are interested in working with cats and dogs can help out at adoption events organized by the SPCA on weekends. This adoption events take place at local pet stores in Montgomery County.
Volunteers are also needed to help process applications for animal adoption. The application approval process involves home visits and background checks. Another great option for animal lovers is to volunteer to foster a dog or cat in your own home, or to help provide transportation for animals to vet appointments. Other opportunities for volunteers to help their local SPCA include assisting with fundraisers and answering phones and emails.
Volunteering with animals is a great way to get kids interested in volunteer work as well. For example, some opportunities for kids to volunteer with animals include walking dogs for their local animal shelter. The dogs appreciate all the love and attention the kids have to give them, as well as the opportunity to get out of their cages and enjoy some exercise.
Kids can also volunteer at a local pet rescue operation on the weekends, where they can gain experience helping out at pet adoption events. This gives them the opportunity to learn about different animals and talk to people at the events about the animals in order to help them find loving homes. They can also perform a variety of other tasks such as cleaning out cages.
In the city of San Francisco, volunteers who want to work with animals will find many opportunities to choose from. For example, the San Francisco SPCA is always looking for volunteers to help out with a wide range of animal care work. They use volunteers in areas like animal socialization, public education and fostering animals.
Another San Francisco organization called Wildcare provides volunteer opportunities for people who want to work in the area of wildlife rehabilitation and nature education. They also need volunteers to operate their emergency hotline and fill a variety of other positions. The Lindsay Wildlife Hospital in Walnut Creek, CA provides a full orientation and training program for volunteers that want to work in their hospital or at the wildlife museum they also operate.
The ASPCA also provides many great opportunities for volunteering with animals. ASPCA volunteers make a vital contribution to the operations of the organization in a variety of ways, such as assisting with cat and dog care at ASPCA shelters, helping to find loving homes for shelter animals, and administrative support. The ASPCA New York offers volunteer positions in the New York City area for people who are at least 16 years old and can commit to working at least 8 hours per month for 6 months or more.
There are several steps to follow in order to become a volunteer with the ASPCA. The organization requires that all of their volunteers attend orientation sessions, where they receive training for different positions at the ASPCA such as volunteer adoptions counselors.
