1. Cruise control
The right hand tends to go numb faster than the left hand because the rider must continually grip the right side to maintain throttle position. Adding an aftermarket cruise control like the Brake Away unit is a huge benefit that will extend your riding time by allowing you to relax your grip on the right side. The Brake Away Cruise Control is by far the best aftermarket option available because of its billet aluminum construction and the fact that it is the only aftermarket cruise control that automatically disengages when you grab the front brake.
2. Exhaust
Exhaust is usually the first modification that riders make. The sound of our engines is mechanical music to most of us and installing an aftermarket exhaust is the first step toward improving sound and performance.
3. Handlebars
Changing handlebars is one of the easiest ways to customize the fit of a motorcycle and handlebars are a focal point that are highly noticeable. The available styles of aftermarket handlebars is amazing and the type you choose says a lot about what type of rider you are Some riders swap out their bars to achieve a more comfortable riding position and to alleviate strain on their back and arms. Some riders just want the tallest ape hangers they can find and some simply want to achieve a certain look for their bike.
4. Air Intake
Air Intake, exhaust and fuel tuners (or jet kits) all work together. Replacing any one of the three without replacing the other two does not allow for maximum performance gains. Motorcycle engines are essentially air pumps. Changing your exhaust allows more air to be pumped out which means more air should be pumped in.
5. Floorboards
Floorboards are a great option for a lot of riders. Replacing footpegs with floorboards gives you more surface area for your feet. Most floorboards mount to the stock footpeg location but they allow you more room to move your feet forward or backward than footpegs which can make long rides more comfortable by allowing you to move your feet around as your ride.
6. Windshields
Accessory windshields come in every size, shape and tint imaginable and there is such a wide variety that there are styles that complement the look of every motorcycle, and most are designed so well that they look like they came on the bike as original equipment.
7. Saddlebags
Saddlebags and On-Bike Luggage are very practical upgrades that makes long distance riding and overnight trips a lot more enjoyable by providing you storage space to bring along more than just a toothbrush and a fresh pair of underwear. If you travel any distances with a passenger, having saddlebags or other bike mounted luggage isn't an option, it is a necessity.
8. Light bars
Light Bars are a hugely popular upgrade. The addition of the bar and driving lights or spot lights will increase the spread of the light pattern and illuminate more of the road in front of you. It will make you more visible to oncoming traffic and the addition of the bar and lights will improve the looks of most cruisers. Some riders prefer crash bar mounted driving lights and these are a great method for increasing front end visibility as well.
9. Grips
Grips often need to be replaced at the same time as handlebars because they sometimes get destroyed when trying to remove them from the old bars. Replacing the grips is a great way to improve comfort and eliminate numbness in the hands by isolating the vibrations that come through the bars and grips on many big twin bikes. A lot of riders will opt to install a throttle assist which makes it easier to operate the throttle and further reduces the hand numbing effects of riding. Grips are also a highly noticeable upgrade that can improve the looks and style of your bike as well as improving your comfort.
10. Chrome
Chrome is cool and if a little is good, a lot is better. Right now, Black is the new Chrome, and there are so many bits and pieces available in Chrome or Black for most cruiser models that you could break the bank upgrading all the available parts on your bike to chrome or black pieces. A lot of riders go over the top in this area, but it looks good and really makes your bike stand out.
