Volunteer community service ideas include projects that kids and their families can get involved in together. For example, there are many ways for families to get involved with helping the homeless in their communities. They can organize or participate in a canned food drive, or a drive to collect clothing, toys, hygiene supplies or blankets which can be donated to the local homeless shelter in your community.
Another way to help is to volunteer to cook food at your local soup kitchen, or to help inspect and sort food for donation to a food pantry. You can also help to clean produce for the food pantry or make sandwiches for homeless kids at a shelter. Another great option is to help out at a fundraising event for local community groups that help the homeless.
Volunteering to help end the problem of childhood hunger in the US is another great way to get involved in community service. Share Our Strength is a national non profit organization which is dedicated to this goal, and provides opportunities for people around the country who want to dedicate their time to this good cause. Share Our Strength helps to connect kids with nutritious food through their No Kid Hungry program.
Share Our Strength operates a number of different programs and events across the country with the help of volunteers, including the Taste of the Nation event which is a premier culinary fundraiser. They also organize the Great American Bake Sale, which is a national campaign that encourages people to host bake sales to raise money for ending childhood hunger.
The University of Maryland Children's Hospital is an other kid's charity that needs volunteers to help with their community service efforts. For example, the hospital organizes a toy drive and posts wish lists online with suggestions on appropriate toy donations for different ages. They also operate a character band-aid drive in order to collect a variety of fun band-aids decorated with some of the most loved cartoon characters for kids.
The hospital is also in need of coloring books, stickers, crayons and markers to give to their young patients to help keep them entertained in the hospital. Many children love to work on craft projects while they are in the hospital, so the hospital has asked volunteers to create craft kits to donate as well.
Working on community service ideas as a family is a great way to bring everyone closer together and create lasting memories while helping others. One great idea is to create a family giving box, which is a simple way of teaching young kids the importance of helping those who are less fortunate. Parents who give their kids an allowance can ask them to contribute a portion of it to the giving box each week, and this money can later be used to donate to community service campaigns like the Toys for Tots drive or the food drive for a community homeless center. It is important to let kids use this money to actually purchase toys or food and participate in delivering them, in order to gain a better understanding of how community service organizations help those in need.
