Regardless, of titles such as Lawyer, Attorney, Advocate, Counselor, Esquire, Barrister, and so on, Attorneys-at-Law are commissioned by law in various degrees, depending on jurisdiction, to professionally help the people resolve their legal disputes and problems.
The term Attorney has its roots in the verb to Attorn: which simply means to transfer one's rights and obligations to another.
Please make sure you understand the difference between Attorney-at-Law and Attorney-in-Fact. An Attorney-in-Fact is referred to an “agency” relationship between a “principal” and an “agent.” It is also called Power of Attorney, which is a legal authorization given from one person to another, who does not need to be a lawyer, to act on behalf of another person. The scope of such an agency can be broad authority or limited to make a specific decision about Principal's matters, such as illness, disability or when the principal can't be present to sign necessary legal documents or consummate a transaction.
