The University of Southampton’s mental health nursing degree course aims to produce professional people who protect and optimise the quality of life of those with mental health problems.

As a society, we find it much easier to talk about being physically unwell than about mental health problems. Nevertheless, mental health nurses must be vocal advocates for individuals and their families or carers.

Mental Health nursing course graduates are central to any health care team and can work with an enviable number of different people including the armed forces, police, GPs, psychiatrists, social workers, schools and support services.

This field of nursing is for people who have got exceptional communication skills, absolute patience and who never judge behaviour, however unacceptable.

Mental health nurses should be able to improve the lives of those who are frequently excluded by others in society and who may be suspicious of support that is offered.

Gary Beecheno is a mature student studying the BN mental health nursing degree course at the University of Southampton.

Gary said:” I am enjoying the diverse nature of my course, which comprises stimulating academic learning and clinical placements within local healthcare settings enabling me to develop as a clinician and extend my academic learning to practice.”

The University of Southampton is seen as a world leader in giving academic and practical training in the field of Health Sciences. Its Bachelor of Nursing, or BN, courses were the first in the country to be accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The BN mental health nursing course is a three year degree and has a means tested bursary of £3,630 to help cover living expenses incurred whist studying.
