Why you need to lose weight?
Study show that obesity rates in the United States are among the highest in the world with 74.6 percent of Americans being overweight or obese. Other industrialized countries have experienced similar increases in obesity as well. Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it can cause a variety of adverse health consequences, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.
How to define overweight or obesity? We can calculate using Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine whether we are overweight or obesity. The formula is as follow:
BMI=your weight (kg)/height x height (meter)
If your BMI is above 23, then you are considering as overweight. If your BMI is above 27.5, then you are considering as obesity.
Some of the reasons why we are overweight or obesity is as follow:
- Without or lack of regular exercise,
- Unhealthy eating habits such as High intake of energy-dense food, eating foods in large portions and more,
- Obesity tends to run in families, suggesting that it may have a genetic cause. Your chances of being overweight are greater if one or both of your parents are overweight or obese.
Obesity can cause us many problems for the following reasons:
- Poor health. Study show that obesity can cause a variety of adverse health consequences, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity is associated with many diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
- Financial burden. According to the latest study, the direct medical cost of obesity and indirect economic loss to obesity has been estimated to be as high as $51.64 billion and $99.2 billion in 1995, respectively; this rose to $61 billion and $117 billion in 2000 in US alone. The financial burden arising from obesity not only affect our country but to our family or ourselves as well. Due to inflation and advancement of medical technology, the medical cost arising from obesity is going to even more costly in future than now.
Obesity person may need to pay more insurance premium than someone with healthy weight because person with obesity weight is deem as higher chance of adverse health consequences than someone with healthy weight. In the worse consequences, the insurance company may refuse to insure that obesity person.
- Self-image. The obesity problem can adversely impact the confidence of the obesity person. The problem may affect interpersonal relationships and pose a serious emotional problem for the obesity person.
