It’s easy to see how “The Secret” made such a big impact in the aughts. The late 90’s were an unfettered dot.com boom, and the early 2000’s saw a real estate boom as well. Suddenly, everyone can invest online and follow stocks and see their investment ‘magically’ grow.

When you see everyone else making money, hand-over-fist, it’s no surprise to think that you can do it too. People get sucked into MLM (multi-level marketing) and going to real estate seminars. So when Rhonda Byrne showed up with stuff like,

"Money is magnetic energy. You are a magnet attracting to you all things, via the signal you are emitting through your thoughts and feelings."

…people went nuts.

Now we are approaching a probable recession and, despite a philosophy that says that abundance is everywhere, it is likely that not everyone who obsesses thinks about money will become one of the superwealthy.

How could it be? I am abundance! I am life’s yearning for abundance! The universe wants to give me yet more abundance! I love money, I think about it all of the time! This makes no sense… I’ve been robbed.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO BECOME WEALTHY IN A RECESSION.

…but not by loving money and wishing for more. That’s how the snake oil salesmen hook you - You’ll make money, I did! I was so down on my luck, now look at me! It’s so easy, even I could do it! - They have hooked you before you even know what they are selling you.

You can love paintings and think about painting and learn about painting and do guided meditations envisioning yourself as a great painter, but, if you do not have a talent as a painter, then you won’t ever be a great painter. Period.

If you want to make a quick buck, then you will never be wealthy.

The Law of Conservation must be maintained. You will get nothing from the universe by signing up for some program, or joining MLM. What have you contributed? What creative abundant energy are you putting into the universe - your wishes??

It only makes you that person so desperate for a date that you give off eau de desperate. And no one will touch you with a ten foot pole. The universe doesn’t want the equivalent of a clingy date!

You can be filled with abundance during a recession, but a recession makes people desperate, and stupid. At seminars they always tell you that the universe rewards action, so sign up now and show the universe you are committed for $10,000. Make it happen, is th refrain.

1. Be grateful. You don’t want to do anything for an ingrate and neither does the universe. Say thank you for what abundance and blessings you have received.

2. Be abundant. In interactions with others, give your heart to them. Love them. (Even when they tick you off.) And love people you don’t even know that well, someone you have no ‘organic’ feelings for either way.

Sure, talk about the fact that Heath Ledger is going to kick ass in the new Batman movie - but do it with an open heart. An easy way to tap into those feelings is to think of the person that you love most in the world.

3. Give back. It’s different for everyone. Some people write, some cook, and some volunteer. Create. Creation is one of the most important parts of receiving abundance.

Try these steps before signing up for some $2,000 seminar. Go through life with fullness and love. Live on purpose and with purpose.
