An Invitation to join Open Space, a new home for Truth and Art, London, England

“Emptiness is the way forward, and the way back, and the way in, and the way out. Emptiness is where we arise and where we disappear.”

Open Space is looking for more members prior to its launch. It seeks to focus a number of disciplines within a physical framework, and discover (in the original sense of the word) their fundamental unity. It will marry action and reflection; truth and art; reality and dreams. It seeks to explore that which already is, to nourish that which can become. To fly high while keeping its feet firmly on the ground. To accept; to change.

Open Space will offer a focus for meditation, for joint enquiry, for sharings and forums; for depth philosophy. Open Space will also be a home for music, theatre, and dance; and for physical and healing arts. It will provide workshop, rehearsal, session and performance space. The creative art elements are intended ensure that the project remains unbounded; the physical and healing art activities will serve as grounding.

They will also be local community events; and peace work, in the world as a whole. Thus deeper spiritual experiences, insights and values will be brought out, and activated, in everyday life. A series of talks and discussions will underpin the various activities, and ‘discover’ unity. For fun, there will be dances, parties, performances and banquets.

The premises have yet to be found. A minimum might be one large and one smaller hall, one or more offices and session rooms; and a café/bistro. They may be rented, or even made available otherwise by a benefactor. Either is good.

The exact structure of the collective will depend on those involved. The preferred option at present is to have a small core owning the business, and a larger collective buying the right to use (parts of) the space during defined timeslots over a longish period. Some timeslots will be reserved for collective use: talks, parties, meetings, parties, dance, performances.

Open Space is a determinedly new venture, with no tradition at all; and therefore with all the tradition in the world. Please join.

Author's Bio

I spent much of the last decade living in and around a community in Pune, India. While it seemed for me to be for a long time the nearest to a home that I had, I finally left India in 1997, partly because I felt that the cultural differences between India and Europe were too great to bridge; and partly because I sensed an urge to renew the basis on which the community in Pune functioned. Since 1997 I have spent much of four years in the wilderness. While I moved into a similar community in Germany in 1999/00, I left this too after half a year, as I found it too tightly structured. Shortly after leaving that community, I decided that the best way forwards was to seek to create or join a working collective in a city. In this way I would remain rooted in a bigger, but more familiar, culture; while at the same time creating a focussed space, A space where miracles become possible through communality; where anonymity recedes; and where a whole evolves: bigger than the parts, but supporting the parts. While I would have preferred to create a community where the members both live and work together, I also felt a need to locate it in a big city, where such projects are rare, partly because the financial/material hurdles are high. I decided therefore instead that it was best to focus on the working collective aspect first. Ideally, once a pool of interested people has been gathered, and sufficient experience gained, a live-and-work community might also evolve, perhaps then outside the city.
