Spiritual transformation leader, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, died and entered his mahasamadhi on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in Holland. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was the Founder of the worldwide Transcendental Meditation Movement.
The famous confluence of three rivers and the location of the popular Kumbhamela (Festival of the Pot), was the site chosen for the cremation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's body. Hundreds of thousands of grieving followers witnessed it live and over the internet on Monday, February 11, 2008.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a leader in the field of spiritual transformation. His work became known worldwide when he introduced members of the popular Beatles music band to his Transcendental Meditation stress management technique.
The structural and institutional development of the Transcendental Meditation movement was the life work of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Teachers of this stress management technique were all taught or supervised personally by him early in the movement. These TM teachers returned to their countries to teach their fellow countrymen how to meditate for two twenty minute periods every day to relieve and dissolve stress from within their consciousness.
Transcendental meditation remains the most researched form of meditation. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ensured that meticulous studies of whole groups of meditating Transcendental Meditation practitioners worldwide were scientifically documented as a way to prove the powerful benefits of group meditation for mainstream society.
Maharishi's life's work of helping to reduce stress around the world has been found to be highly relevant in the worldwide problem of crime. Research exists to show how large groups of TM meditators reduces the incidence of crime in large, crime-ridden cities.
Another important aspect of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's global spiritual transformation work was in the area of education. He left the legacy of having developed a worldwide structured plan for the development and training of all aspects and gifts of the individual. This included the dissolving of stress within the consciousness of each person so as to fully allow self realisation in daily life to practically unfold.
Consciousness-based education is the hallmark of his educational vision and life's mission. He taught that for world peace, enlightenment and heaven on Earth to manifest, society would have to ensure the full development of both the left and right brain functions in a rounded and balanced way.
The motto of the Maharishi University of Management is 'Knowledge Is Structured In Consciousness'. Located in Fairfield, Iowa in the United States, it was previously named the Maharishi International University or MIU. It is charged with spearheading the implementation of Maharishi's consciousness-based education around the world.
Many supporters and practitioners of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation technique report feeling increased blissful awareness both during and in between their meditation practice since his passing. This, despite grieving for the loss of their spiritual leader.
As they celebrate his life and work, TM practitioners and the Transcendental Meditation movement leaders will continue to ensure that Maharishi's Mahesh Yogi's commitment to the dissolving of stress within the individual, society and the entire world proceeds.
In his powerful, simple and often humourous way, Maharishi taught during the course of his adult life that humanity's suffering was a result of the build up of stress within the consciousness of individuals collectively around the world. His spiritual transformation and stress management technique prescription was to meditate for twenty minutes two times every day using the Transcendental Meditation technique.
