Summary:
Stephen Covey wrote a runaway bestseller in the Self Improvement Industry, titled the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This book has sold over 10 million copies worldwide! In the book, Covey lays out 7 proven principles for success.

Let me explain exactly what I think these mean and what I learned from them.

Number 1 – Be Proactive.
That’s almost self explanatory. It means you are taking the initiative. You are not living reactively, but are taking a proactive stance in your life.

Number 2 – Begin with the End in Mind.
The End is really your goal or your goals. Effectiveness is not just a matter of reaching a goal but rather of achieving the right goal. Imagine yourself sitting in the back of the room at your funeral, and what people could honestly say about you based on the way you are now. Do you like what you hear? Is that how you want to be remembered? If not, change it.

Number 3 – Do first things first.
This means to focus on your most important priorities, your top priorities. This doesn’t always mean urgent. The phone is ringing, and picking it up might seem urgent, but the caller is not always important. It could be a telemarketer. Focus on your top priorities.

Number 4 – Think Win Win
In personal, business or other relationships, exercise “interpersonal leadership” to make both parties winners. Two wins make everyone better off; two losses hurts everyone. A win/lose relationship creates a victor and leaves someone injured. Think Win Win.

Number 5 - “Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood”
Communication is a two-way street. To develop win/win relationships, find out what the
other parties want, and what winning means to them. Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.

Number 6 - “Synergize”
Cooperation multiplies the power of one. In fact, “creative cooperation” may yield a
force greater than the sum of the parts. The buzzword to describe
this kind of relationship is “synergy,” which means bringing together a whole that
is greater than the sum of the parts.

Number 7 - “Sharpen the Saw”
There’s an old story about a man sawing a log. The work is going slowly and the man is exhausted. The more he saws, the less he cuts. A passerby watches for a while and suggests that the man take a break to sharpen the saw. But the man says he can’t stop to sharpen
the saw because he is too busy sawing! A dull saw makes the work tiresome, tedious
and unproductive. Highly effective people take the time they need to sharpen their tools,
which are, in fact, their bodies, souls, mind and hearts. It’s time for “self-renewal.”

David - thanks for sharing with this audience Steven Covey's 7 Habits. Steven and his son are both wonderful "bridges" from corporate business to the energetic spiritual paths that most selfgrowth members follow. Even though their semantics and principles seem separate from the healing modalities used by many here, they really are related. And, it is necessary for many of us to be bridges so that others may gently shift their paradigms. We aid their transformation by creating ways for them to shift gradually and with little or no pain. In the process the Reiki, EFT, other energy modalities all support the person's frequency to catch up. I used to use Covey's information in my corporate training, where I also applied many energy modalities (not blatantly, but labeling them in corporate terms), and they were/are good tools! Thanks for your concise video!

Number 1 and 2 are vital, as when building my own online physical fitness store, before even developing my muscle building and fat loss programs, although I never read any materials on success in business, I was visualizing the completed goal, and proactively seeking each step to make this desired destination a reality.I feel that the first two steps will prove to be the cornerstone behind any successful venture, business or otherwise. Now if only I could remember those pictures... :-)

Dear Stephan: There has to be something said for longevity in the world of business and this title has been around many years. What keeps this teaching circulating is that for some it works! Well put!! All these 7 points are positive. Successful people are forward thinkers. This is so important to make changes in life as in all addictive behaviors: compulsive eating, gambling, codependency, drinking, compulsive sex etc. Negativity leads to frustration, disappointment and simply giving up and never getting to the goal. Thanks David!! More info on changing addictive behavior? click: http://www.untwist-your-thinking.com Great reminder. Thanks again!!

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People does a good job of addressing half of the challenge of a great life, but ignores the other half. In addition to planning and action, which Covey addresses, a great life requires acceptance of the many failures that life WILL throw at us - without regrets or resentments. www.DreamThisDay.com

Very interesting. The part that hit the mark very accurately is the bunny sharpening the saw. You see we imagine that we know everything there is to know. At that point we loose something new that was coming our way. Do you think you know much? Find out more.

In trying to find ways to direct and motivate my youngest (16) son into the "real world" I am constantly searching for "short but sweet" ways to get the messages to him. I think 5 minutes is about the perfect time limit for his ever active mind and this is a great message. The story will stick with him (I hope) and the habits begin to integrate into his being. I feel that I MUST find ways to counteract all the me-ism, negativity and just plain stupid stuff he loads himself up with on Youtube, Myspace, etc... and Fingers crossed!

I think Number 5 is the most important. Most people think that others are similar to them in ways of thinking or doing. But different people have different ways of thinking. All of us are unique; so it's good advice to enter other people's world first before convincing them to your own.
ERICK NERI
great summary of the book in a video.

Principle 5 is my favourite: Seek first to Understand and then to be Understood. This is perhaps the easiest to understand, but the hardest to implement. I was reading recently that one of Barack Obama's greatest attributes is his ability to listen. He has mastered the ability to understand what others are going through and then respond. No wonder that he had such a positive impact at the recent G-20 Summit: Barack Obama article in Time 100

I believe all seven habits are equally important, but most people neglect the last; "Sharpening the Saw". The majority of people are complacent about their health. They take it forgranted until something goes wrong and then it is usually too late. We need to take our health seriously starting right now.

* BeiYin - The People Whisperer*
Quote David Riklan: "Dead BeiYin, We understand that in these challenging financial times, it is becoming increasing important to become effective..." Hard to believe that this was send to members of Selfgrowth. As a joke this would be too macabre and also as the strategic intention to provoke a reaction. I inform you that I am not dead, even though I am not taking part in activities here. Your 'Selfgrowth' has very little to do with growth, all turns around the little, precious self of lousy personalities that are looking for self confirmation, mainly by getting richer, bigger and more and more blown up. I have been a member to represent a position that is not ruled by illusions of fake values, giving the feeling of existence based on money and success. My expression might not be effective, but felt as needed to be said, - out of my responsibility. If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask me, - I would be glad to be of help. BeiYin

Perhaps you need to open your mind because David's site is all about self-growth. As we grow and understand ourselves as spiritual beings, we are better able to serve others. A person is successful as long as they are moving to a more evolved place in their life and working with Spirit as a co-creator. It is your perception that it is all about getting richer. Might I add that the more money you do have, the more people you can help. It is all about serving others and until we get to a place in our being that we see that, we are not living thru the eyes of God.

Watching the video of 7 habits I too was thrown. Even though I have studied various healing modalities I practice and teach Japanese styles of Usui Reiki -- balance and harmony are the key. The meditation I teach seems to be on the same wave as FalconBlanco. Think of a time when you felt happy and healthy. Was it not a time when everything felt in balance and harmony was within and around you? When things just feel right are they not in balance and surrounded with harmony? When a positive balance shows in any area of life it brings good feeling, that can multiply. Mikao Usui founded his spiritual practice on universal love and harmony. Japanese styles of Usui Reiki may seen simple as there are only 2 habits -- balance and harmony, but the journey is blissful when the everyday chatter of what should/would/could be is allowed to slip on by. I am simply sharing the angle from which I see things. Daianshin to all -- www.naturalhealinglearning.com
