Faith and Spirituality Expert

The Rev. Cory L. Kemp, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay with a double major in Communication and the Arts and Social Change and Development and a minor in Women's Studies, was ordained into the ministry of the Moravian Church in North America after completing her Master of Divinity degree studies through Moravian Theological Seminary.

Over twenty-five years of experience in individual and community ministries gives Rev. Kemp an informed perception about faith, its implications and struggles in everyday life. Rev. Kemp focuses her work on helping people understand their faith and how faith can become transformational in their lives through individual and group coaching, lectures, seminars, worshp leadership and personal studies in prayer, journaling and faith development.

"Creating Women Ministries was founded to provide resources for theological education and dialogue. That is a fancy way of encouraging people to think about what they actually believe and define that in how they live their day-to-day lives. I have quoted my maternal grandmother, who passed on before I was born, quite frequently on this subject. According to my mother, grandma liked to remind her that, "Whether you know it or not, you live by what you believe." It is an interesting kind of legacy, to sort through the facts and circumstances of one's life in search of God's activity."

Event Programming Resources

Providing programming for your gatherings and events can be both exciting and challenging. If you are looking for presentations on relevant, engaging topics woven with rich practicality, humor and warmth that speak to how you live your faith, Creating Women Ministries has something special to offer you. And, even better, each of these programs can be tailored to fit your group's needs.

General Event Programming

Wearable Faith: Living By What You Believe- When is the last time you tried on your faith to see how it fits? Are you still defining your faith by what you remember from Sunday School ten, twenty or thirty years ago? It may be time to clear out your closet, see where your faith has grown over the years, and decide how you would like it to look in the future. My Grandma Clara liked to say, "Whether you know it or not you live by what you believe." Do you know how you live by what you believe?

Journaling Your Journey: Writing Your Faith - How has your faith informed your life? Considering how your spiritual story has unfolded can reveal how you perceive God, your purpose in life and how your understanding of the holy shapes your life. Discover how God has always been working on your behalf, and learn how to pay attention for how God is assisting you in the present by journaling memories, moments and scenes from your own life journey.

Visiting With God: Prayer At Its Best - What does your prayer life look like? Are you satisfied with having God as a friendly acquaintance? Or would you like to be able to invite God into your home, and your heart, for some really great sharing and conversation over coffee, the way you would with a trusted friend? The Bible gives us guides, information and personal stories of individuals who have enjoyed close communication with God. We also each have stories to share about how God has entered our lives in mysterious, yet familiar ways. Talking honestly with God and listening with an open heart, mind and soul is what prayer is all about.

Seasonal Event Programming

Thanksgiving and Giving - There really is more to this season than family feuds, football games and pumpkin pie. What are we most grateful for, and what are we willing to give to make the world look more the way God intended?

Advent: Preparing for God With Us - We make space in our lives for so many things that irritate and annoy us, and sap our energy. The blessings of this season offer the joy of making room for something quite wonderful, if we are willing.

Lent: Abundance in the Wilderness - Contrary to popular belief, not all wilderness experiences are created equal, nor do they always involve giving up what we love Sometimes the wilderness, like Lent, is a time to set aside distractions and focus in on what we love best and want most for our lives.

Pentecost: Blessings and Gifts - While many of us are beginning to identify our spiritual gifts, learning how and where to effectively use them and understanding what blessings they hold for our own lives is equally important and delightful.

Trinity: God Our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer - How do you see God creating, redeeming and sustaining the world? How does God's creative power, redeeming love and sustaining spirit inform your life, your community? The season of Trinity lasts a long time and gives us plenty of opportunity to explore the abundance of who God is and how God acts among us.

You Don't See Many Chickens in Clearance:

Essays on Faith and Living

An Introduction

You Don't See Many Chickens in Clearance: Essays on Faith and Living was originally published as a series of articles for Creating Women Ministries, a website I founded to provide resources for theological education and dialogue. That is a fancy way of encouraging people to think about what they actually believe and define that in how they live their day-to-day lives. I have quoted my maternal grandmother, who passed on before I was born, quite frequently on this subject. According to my mother, grandma liked to remind her that, "Whether you know it or not, you live by what you believe." It is an interesting kind of legacy, to sort through the facts and circumstances of one's life in search of God's activity.

Growing up in the Moravian Church, I often heard people talk about their lebenslauf, or spiritual journey. We place great emphasis these days on finding our purpose in life, a thought process inherently designed to move us forward. Considering our spiritual journey does encompass this understanding of God having intentionally created each of us, but also encourages our conversation with God on what our lives have been and what we would like them to become. This is a partnership, if you will, not of convenience, but of conscious choice, reflection and action.

We can also not deny that we are all in this together, and that, as a friend of mine said years ago in an "Aha!" moment, "We don't all think alike." He didn't mean that we all don't share the same values, which is also true, but that we don't all think about things the same way. Our sense of logic is sometimes clear only to ourselves, so we must sometimes put some effort into translating that for others, and they for us. That is conversation, and we are most sorely in need of this common human activity on many important topics, but none more so than our faith.

We are a country here in the United States that has "In God We Trust" stamped on our currency, yet we claim to have been founded on the beliefs of religious freedom and separation of Church and State. We want public prayers offered at government functions, but attack people as being unpatriotic for suggesting otherwise. I would suggest that we have a glorious opportunity not to shout each other down, but to open a dialogue on faith in community that we can carry with us into a dialogue with the rest of the world. There is a chance that we can create an avenue of hope that can broaden our perspective and experience to be more inclusive of God's creativity and lovingkindness.

And so, I offer these essays with hopeful intent, that we may come to know ourselves, each other and God more intimately, and in so doing, become more aware of how it is that we live by what we believe.
