The premise of the book is that contemporary men are bored; they fear risk, and they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. Eldredge believes that if Christian men are going to change from a wimpy bunch of “really nice guys” to men who are made in the image of God, they must re-examine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true “wild” hearts.

Eldredge claims that men often seek validation in venues like work or in the conquest of women. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the “secret longings” of their hearts. Although Wild at Heart is written for men, it also helps women to understand men while in relationships.
