After his three shunts placements, Dexter  did not die as expected, but survived. I was told that he would be retarded and would only live to be about three years old. He would not be able to function properly as other children and his growth would be stunted. The doctors also added that Dexter might gain about a pound a year. Chapter IX, page 59 of Hallelujah! My son was blessed to live and to grow up, go to school, also have the same opportunity as other children and amazingly, run track in school. It's exceptional because the doctors forbid Dexter to take physical education or play any sports such as football, basketball, baseball, or run because of the atypical nature of his illness.
