For survivors this translates into hope about recovery and about the future. Once the denial around the severity of your abuse has been shattered, it can feel like an endless abyss of pain and confusion. But this is temporary and breaking through the denial is necessary to be able to feel the feelings that need healed in the first place. While once a victim of your past, you have the power the heal from your abuse and transform your own life today and forever after. You have everything you need to heal within you. You only need tools and resources to access those strengths and power. Therapy is a process for helping you to do that.
Incest and other forms of childhood sexual abuse can interfere in every area of an adult's or a developing adolescent's life. Survivors deserve to heal on every level so that they can move forward and develop satisfying healthy adult lives and rewarding relationships.
Sexual abuse survivors typically develop various symptoms as coping tools and solutions to events and emotions. Symptoms can be emotional, physical, mental, or behavioral and often also serve as metaphors for problems experienced on another level within the individual or the family system. Eventually, these symptoms become the problem rather than the solution and clients often seek help for symptom relief. In addition to learning new coping skills that can serve to reduce symptoms, it is important to be able to resolve the underlying trauma and abuse issues that led to symptom development. Therapy for sexual abuse recovery while painful at times, should be an overall safe, rewarding, and empowering experience for survivors.
