I’d like to share my story with you. This is a little bit about
who I am and how my entire life has been about "following
my bliss."

In the 80’s I was teenager, and I followed my Bliss by Break
dancing and Pop Locking. This is a form of dance that
evolved out of Hip Hop culture. I remember how much I
loved breaking and popping. I did it every day of my life. I
practiced breaking and popping before school, during
school, and after school. This is what I thought about all
day long. I believed that I would grow up and do this
professionally.

I remember one time when I was in 8th grade – walking
through the hallways. A kid came up to me and challenged
me to dance against him. (In Popping and Breaking, there
were impromptu dance competitions that just happened). I
was so nervous, because I had never competed like this
before, and I wasn’t sure I was ready. I knew I was good,
but I still felt afraid. The kid kept challenging me, so I put
my books down and started dancing. It seemed like the
whole school was there. I could hear the crowd cheering
and making sounds as I made my moves. It was
exhilarating. I loved the feeling of manipulating and
controlling my body. I enjoyed this so much that it didn’t
really matter to me if anyone else was watching. I had a
pure love and joy for the expression of myself through
movement. I didn’t really know it then, but I was following
my bliss.

In my 20’s it was basketball. Like breaking and popping, I
spent all my free time practicing my dribbling, shooting, and
ball handling skills. There was nothing more fun to me then
to practice my moves and perfect them, and then to test
them out in games. I loved the feeling of driving past
someone and scoring.

I remember being on an intramural basketball team and we
were playing in a championship game. There was a few
minutes left and we needed a score to keep the lead. One
of my teammates past me the ball and I drove to the hoop
and jumped in the air. A defender from the other team
slammed into me and knocked me to the ground and as I
was falling I managed to throw the ball up towards the hoop
and it went in. The whistle blew and the ref called a foul
on the other team. I went to the free throw line, hit the shot,
and we won the game. I received a little trophy that I’ve
treasured for years. Hey, it wasn’t the NCAA tournament,
but I was following my bliss and doing what I loved.

Now I’m in my 30’s and for the past 7 years I’ve been a Life
Coach and a Spiritual Counselor. I assist people in moving
through mental and emotional blocks and towards getting
what they really want. Like popping & breaking, and
basketball – I spend my time improving myself by reading
books, listening to tapes, attending workshops and sharing
my knowledge with others to assist them in achieving their
dreams. This brings me great joy.

I had a client who I was having lunch with. He was a part
time actor. I asked him “What do you really, really want?”
He said, “I want to be a full time actor.” I said, “Great, what’
s stopping you from doing it?” And for the next few hours
he gave me a list of mental and emotional blocks that was
preventing him from living his dream. I assisted him in
processing through these blocks – one by one – until he
was clear. At the end of that hour, I will never forget the
look in his eyes. He said, “I know what I’m going to do
now.” I said, “What?” He said, “I’m going to quit my job
and become a full time actor.” I said, “Do you have a
plan?” He said “no” I said, “let’s make one, so you a clear
direction.” We made up an action plan. Sure enough, in
the next 3 months he was able to quit his job, and move into
acting full time. He is now a successful – full time – working
actor in Hollywood. He’s been in movies, TV shows, and
commercials. And I have to say that when I see him on TV,
I get chills and a tremendous feeling of joy because I know
that I had something to do with his success. His success is
my success. And this is how I’ve been following my bliss
today in my current life.
