Best Sellers: got parts? An Insider's Guide to Managing Life Successfully with Dissociative Identity Disorder Career Focus: Publishing and Marketing Affiliation: Publisher's Marketing Association, Reader Views Many first-time authors have stars in their eyes. They expect instant success out of the gate, the vision seems crystal clear to them: have a book signing and they will come. The reality is that in major markets competition can be fierce and you may have to proove that you can bring out people and in some cases bookstores are so cynical that you actually "rent" space from them to hold your sales event. Remember, all bookstores work on consignment so if you're book does get there, it better sell in 90 days or its out of the store and back to you in sellable or often unsellable condition.
A book signing must be managed like any political or sales campaign. You need to get the message out to the public many different ways. In the end, it may require making phone calls and emails to confirm that people will show up for the event. In a world where 200,000 new titles are published in the USA each year, calling yourself an author doesn't get much other than allowing you to buy a black coffee at Starbucks for $3.50.
The publishing world can be both arcane and confusing for the first-time author. Our experience in publishing the very best self-growth, psychology, social work, and disabilities books can be a beacon of light for you. The first decision you will have to make is whether to self-publish or sign with a traditional publishing house like Loving Healing Press.
Like any new venture in your life, the key to success is self-education. You probably wouldn't decide overnight to go buy the first expensive luxury car you laid your eyes on today, so don't make any publishing decisions rashly. A book is a legacy that will last beyond your lifetime -- each of our titles is held in the Library of Congress, an institution already 200 years old. Your easiest path to self-education is to listen to the weekly broadcasts of Authors Access, the podcast with publisher Victor R. Volkman and top reviewer agency owner Irene Watson of Reader Views.
