Having multiple reef aquariums in my home, and watching the ecosystems that thrive in them, I can unquestioningly tell you that from the lowest life forms to the highest (as far as complexity is concerned), I feel quite certain animals have souls. I think the bigger questions is are there people in our world right now who don't have souls.

All the best!

They absolutely have a soul. My dog has an old soul and he is very wise giving me advice!

Ha as an animal lover, I have to admit, I never question if an animal has a spirit or soul -- BUT there are people that have made me wonder ....

Hmm...It's an interesting question. What do we mean when we say "soul"?

Hey, Bill!

You know, you bring up a very interesting point. Most people, I think, can easily accept the idea the cats and dogs have souls. But would those same people be able to say the same thing about a goldfish? Or a frog? A grasshopper? We're all part of the design, I'm sure, but it seems a lot more recognizable in animals that snuggle against us or hang on our every word. I guess that makes humans an awfully vain and arrogant species, doesn't it? Of course, Jainists have long believed that every living creature possesses a soul.

It's also interesting that the majority of people answering the poll answered that they hope animals have souls. Hmmm.

Good point about people too. lol!

In the traditional sense--a devine essence that returns 'home' after death in the physical plane.

So...what do ya' think?

I feel a "soul" is the extension of the creative energy that is everywhere. Part of it projects itself to a physical shape so that it can experience contrast and thus define itself better. And once it leaves the physical form, the part of it that was "physical" and collected experiences, keeps its uniqueness, but as a part of the larger consciousness.

I believe the soul is that part of us that is totally connected to the earth, other species, and everything that springs from the earth and whether or not we recognize it is immaterial to its' existence.

Whether they have souls or not is immaterial (get the pun?). You might as well debate whether human beings have soul. It's a question of religious, philosophical, and personal opinion.

Animals have feelings: they love, they grieve, they feel pleasure and they feel pain. (I write this as my wonderfully needy cat snuggles against my hip.) For that reason alone, animals deserve our care, kindness, and respect. Even if we eat them.

Warm regards,
Morgana

Very well put, Morgana. As an avid hunter, I agree strongly with your last sentence. One of the main reasons I hunt is that, as a carnivore, I know I am responsible for the taking of animal lives. I prefer the blood be on my hands, literally, than to pay someone to neatly package animal parts so I don't have to think about where they came from, or how the animals were (mis)treated.

As a hunter, I know I do my part to make sure any animal I am
going to eat is killed in the most humane manner possible (far more humanely than any non-human predator would use).

Indeed they do...and to echo John, well said. ;-)
