Acupuncture helps heart patients
"Acupuncture helps to calm the nerves.  Acupuncture can improve the prospects of people with severe heart failure, research has shown.   Researchers found the ancient Chinese practice has the potential to dramatically reduce the pressure on the heart.  This is because it can reduce activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates involuntary movements such as heartbeat and blood pressure. Over-activation of sympathetic nerves is common in heart failure
patients. It damages their long-term prospects because it forces the weakened heart to work harder, as the blood has to be forced through blood vessels that are
constricted by the nervous activity."

World Diabetes Day Has People Pondering Their Risk
" This World Diabetes Day, answer a question posed directly to you: how high is your risk of developing the disease?   Do you eat right and exercise? If you don't, getting on the right track may be as intimidating as being asked to scale Mount Everest. But there is growing evidence that even the most simple lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce the risk of certain diseases, and diabetes is at the top of the list. A soon-to-be published, national study found that people at high risk for
type 2 diabetes can cut that risk in half by adopting simple lifestyle changes
like losing just a few pounds and taking a brisk walk each day. The risk reduction was almost twice that experienced by people taking blood-sugar-lowering medications."

Is organic food really better for your health?
"Fruit and vegetables
 Last year the Food
Standards Agency said there was not enough information available to prove that organic produce is nutritionally better for you. But the Soil Association, the UK's largest organic organisation, says scientific evidence contradicts this view."

*** SHORT HEALTH/SAFETY TIPS FOR THE WEEK ***
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMON COLD -"Believe it or not, something as simple as sleeping on time could be your greatest anti-cold weapon!  Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of healing, has an interesting theory on disease. It believes that all disease happens because the elements that make up our body go out of balance. The common cold, for instance, strikes when the body's digestive fire or "agni" is dampened. What causes that? Well, the cold weather itself! Yes, the temperature outside dips, and with it, your immunity."  (To read the complete article entitled:  Turning up the heat on Common Cold  by Shubhra Krishan, go to)
http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Krishan2.html

DEPRESSION - "Maybe you are feeling blue, down in the dumps, nothing seems to be going right and everything is an effort. Most of us at some time go through a period of feeling "depressed". This type of depression is often termed reactive and is generally brought on by difficult life circumstances - stress, bereavement,
unemployment, over-work, physical illness, separation/divorce and even supposedly happy events such as the birth of a baby or a move to a new home."
(To read the complete article entitled:  Fighting Depression - It's the little
things that make a difference.  by Jeanne Johnson, go to)
http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Johnson6.html

PMS - "Factors that can exacerbate the hormone imbalance include low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia - which accounts for our carbohydrate and sugar cravings at around the time of menstruation as the body tries to compensate); excessive oestrogen or too little progesterone from the diet; and high stress levels which can also interfere with the regulating hormones in the pituitary. Orthodox medication to help severe PMS is a low dose progesterone pill but is not without side effects. However, for many, PMS is not bad enough to seek treatment from the Doctor, but can be bad enough to cause a nuisance and affect relationships at home and at work."

*** BOOK REVIEW  New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses
by Deni Bown, Deni Brown ***

The essential guide for all herb garden enthusiasts.
The Herb Society of America's New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses is the most comprehensive illustrated encyclopedia of herbs yet produced. With a fresh, new A-Z format for easy reference, it lists the culinary and medicinal properties of each herb alongside all the information you need to cultivate herbs in your own garden.

A fresh look at herbs. The HSA New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses responds to the widespread interest in herbs today and the ways in which they have been used since ancient times. This comprehensive reference work
supplies a wealth of information on herbs grown and used all over the world, for gardeners, herbalists, and cooks alike.

Quick identification guide. The extensive A-Z of color photographs provides a unique identification guide. In addition to every species familiar to gardeners, it also includes a number of rarely seen examples from remote corners of the globe. Each photograph is accompanied by a detailed botanical description of the plant's genus and species, its growth habit, size, hardiness, and flowering period. Symbols show the plant's hardiness, the part of the plant that is used, and for what purpose.

An illuminating history. The general section gives detailed information on uses of each herb, from domestic applications in cooking, beauty, and medicine to commercial processing in the perfume and food industries. The traditional role of herbs in such varied cultures as Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Native American medicine is also explored.

Practical tips for cultivation. Garden designs and planting plans, illustrated with photographs and artworks created especially for this book, gives the gardener a wealth of ideas for planting and growing herbs, which can be adapted for both a smaller plot and a traditional herb garden on the grand scale.
