Use of echinacea to treat the common cold warrants further
investigation
“Although it is difficult to ignore the widespread use and persistent
anecdotal reports of the benefits of echinacea, scientific evidence of
its
efficacy remains unconvincing. Nevertheless, the evaluation of
echinacea
as a treatment option for the common cold should continue to be
investigated, according to Dr Ronald Turner, University of Virginia
School
of Medicine, Charlottesville.”

** WARD OFF The Long-Term DAMAGE of STRESS **
There are many approaches to preventing and managing stress reactions.
Once a stress reaction occurs, it can take hours, even days to recover.
Since the effects of stress are also cumulative, a daily routine of
reducing the physiologic response becomes necessary to ward off
long-term
damage and ensuing physical problems like irritability, headaches,
hypertension, gastritis, arrhythmias, depression, fatigue, immune
deficiencies, etc. A new approach to reducing daily stress is whole
body
pulsed electromagnetic field treatments.

The no-diet fat busters
“If you are about to go on a New Year diet, think again. Research
increasingly supports the idea that calorie counting is oversimplistic
and
selfdefeating because there are many types of fat. More than 90 per
cent
of dieters will also regain any weight they lose.”

Study Links Western Dietary Pattern with a Greater Risk for Type 2 Diabetes in Men
“Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have linked a
diet
high in consumption of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy
products
and refined grains, combined with obesity and inactivity with a high
risk
for type 2 diabetes in men. Approximately 16 million Americans have
type
2
diabetes, which can cause blindness, kidney failure and heart disease.
The
study results appear in the February 5 issue of the Annals of Internal
Medicine, (www.annals.org).”

*** SHORT HEALTH/SAFETY TIPS FOR THE WEEK ***
SUBLUXATIONS – “Chiropractors are often asked, "When should children
first
be checked for subluxations?" "From before conception onwards", comes
the
reply. This answer can initially seem confusing but there are two
logical
reasons.
Firstly, an improved health index on the part of the parents before
they
conceive naturally extends to a healthier conception and gestation.
This
is supported by the number of quality-of-life research articles
presented
so far that demonstrate that the removal of subluxation in a person
gives
a better performing person.”

SMOKING – “When you started smoking you will have been lulled in to a
false sense of security, thinking you can give up whenever you want
until
you actually try to stop and can’t. Some people would have started
smoking when they were young and most when they were teenagers.
Everyone
in the world no matter who they are want to be accepted. We all fear
rejection and ridicule and the majority of young adults have added
pressure such as peer pressure and building there own identity.”

AROMATHERAPY - “It seems that nearly everyone I know has been either
fighting or recovering from a cold or flu these last few weeks. And
many
of my clients have been asking how essential oils can help them prevent
or
heal their illnesses. There are a few things you can do to prevent
yourself from catching a bad cold:
* Diffuse eucalyptus essential oil at home to clean and purify the air.
* Take a "winter bath" once or twice a week with the following
aromatherapy blend to boost your immune system and keep you healthy
during
the chilly winter!”

*** BOOK REVIEW: Living Well with Autoimmune Disease: What Your Doctor
Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know by Mary J. Shomon ***
--------------------------------------------------
Autoimmune diseases affect 50 million Americans, mostly women, who
frequently remain undiagnosed and untreated, or are treated
ineffectively.
Living Well with Autoimmune Disease helps readers pinpoint symptoms,
find
the right practitioner, and learn cutting-edge approaches to reduce
symptoms and reverse their disease.
Author Mary Shomon, who has the immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis,
explains how the immune system is supposed to work, and what can go
wrong.
Then she discusses more than 20 specific autoimmune diseases--such as
chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, thyroid
disease, Graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes,
fibromyalgia, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis. For each, she covers
symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
Shomon, a patient advocate and Web guide for people with thyroid
disease,
hears the most success stories from people who combine conventional
treatment with complementary therapies, so she gives specific
strategies
for using herbs, diet, and mind/body therapies. She also includes a
30-page checklist of risk factors and symptoms (helpful when you have
no
idea what condition you might have), a guide to finding and working
with
the right practitioner, and an extensive resources section that
includes
patient support organizations, Web sites, and books. --Joan Price
