* Children might beat allergies -- by eating them: Study calls for egg or peanut powder in small doses to build up resistance *

Elizabeth White's first encounter with peanuts -- a nibble of a peanut butter cracker at age 14 months -- left the toddler gasping for breath.
Within minutes, her airways were swelling shut.

A mere fifth of a peanut was enough to trigger an allergic reaction.

So it was with trepidation that her parents enrolled Elizabeth, at 4½, in a groundbreaking experiment: Could eating tiny amounts of the very foods that endanger them eventually train children's bodies to overcome severe food allergies?

* Living near busy street ups breathing problems *

The closer people live to a main road, the more likely they are to suffer from respiratory symptoms such as breathlessness and wheezing, a new study from Switzerland shows.

"These findings from a general population provide strong confirmation that living near busy streets leads to adverse respiratory health effects," Dr. Lucy Bayer-Oglesby, of the University of Basel, and colleagues write in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Mothers who take fish oil supplements during pregnancy may improve their baby's hand-eye coordination and boost brain development.

A new study shows babies born to women who took fish oil supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids during the last half of pregnancy had better hand-eye coordination as toddlers than babies born to women who took olive oil supplements containing other types of omega fatty acids.

* Belly Fat *

It seems that everyone is always asking me what the best ab workouts are to get a flatter stomach. The common belief that ab workouts will help you to lose belly fat is one of the biggest misconceptions I deal with daily as a fitness professional. Almost everyone has varying degrees of excess body fat in the abdominal region, and the best way to burn off that extra stomach fat continues to elude most.

* Gout *

Almost 90% of gout victims are men over thirty years old.

But women can also suffer from gout, especially if they take certain medications such as blood pressure drugs. Most women who suffer from gout are 60 years or older.

* Essential Oils *

Since the dawn of history, it's been well established that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and East Indians have used essential oils for religious rituals, for their healing and soothing properties, as well as for bathing rituals, romantic seduction, and beauty. Today, it seems that we are embracing not only the elements of these ancient practices, but also recognizing the connection that smell has on our individual psyche and well-being.

*** Book Review: Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness – By Donna Farhi ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

As the physical practice of yoga has become popular in the West, many of the spiritual aspects have been lost. There is much more to yoga than reducing stress, increasing flexibility, looking great, and remaining youthful. Yoga is an ancient, integrated system designed to educate and unite body, mind, and spirit and teach the practitioner how to be present both on and off the mat.

In "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness," Donna Farhi, Yoga Journal columnist, author of "The Breathing Book," and internationally recognized yoga teacher, shows yoga students of all levels and traditions how to use yoga as spiritual practice and a vehicle to connect body and mind.

Most of "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit" is devoted to the asanas (yoga
postures) and the practices of breathing and meditation. More than 240 photographs and line drawings show how to do the various poses and exercises. Postures are accompanied by benefits and effects, cautions, tips, and prenatal suggestions. Numerous inquiries are spread through the text to help the reader explore the body-mind-spirit connection.
Farhi also explains what yoga is, summarizes the living principles (wise characteristics and codes for living soulfully), discusses the seven moving principles of yoga, and explores the body's organ systems. If you are ready to take your yoga practice to the next level, "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit" is an excellent guide to help you connect with everything yoga has to offer. --Ellen Albertson
