* Want to stop disease from spreading? Open a window *

Preventing the spread of disease in a hospital may be as simple as opening a window, an international team of researchers reported on Monday.

The low-tech solution could help prevent the spread of airborne infections such as tuberculosis -- and ironically, old-fashioned hospitals with high ceilings and big windows may offer the best design for this, they reported.

* On some menus, one plate packs 2,000 calories: Popular dishes at chain restaurants exceed entire day's worth of calories *

Everyone likes to splurge a little when they go to a restaurant, but new research suggests some of those indulgences may be packing way more calories -- and, if you aren't careful, pounds -- than you think.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a research group that advocates good nutrition, highlighted menu items from popular chain restaurants that in some cases have as many calories in just one plateful as some people should eat in an entire day.

* Vitamin D May Cut Elders' Falls: Fewer Falls Seen in Elderly Taking High Dose of Vitamin D *

Vitamin D, taken in a high dose, may help prevent falls in the elderly.

That finding comes from a study of 124 residents of a Boston nursing home.

The study shows that residents who took a daily dose of 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D for five months were less likely to fall than those who took either lower doses or no vitamin D.

* Hanging by a Thread: Flossing Your Teeth Can Save Your Life *

Poor dental hygiene can not only destroy the first impression you make, but contrary to what was previously believed, oral hygiene and general health are strongly connected.

In fact, recent studies have shown that neglecting your dental care may also be damaging to your heart. Inflammation of the gums, a condition medically known as periodontal disease, has been found to significantly increase the risk of the development and progression of heart disease.

* Children's Sleep *

If your child has frequent health and/or emotional problems, consider that a lack of sleep may be all or at least part of the problem.

Every function in the body is affected by sleep. And for a child, the risks of sleep deprivation are much more serious than simply waking up in a grumpy mood. Research shows that children with sleep disturbances have more medical problems -- such as allergies, ear infections, and hearing problems. They are also more likely to have social and emotional problems.

* Protein *

By far, the most common question I hear is:

"If I don't eat meat, or as much meat, where do I get my protein?" Sound familiar?

Let's cut to the chase -- the protein chase. I'm a simple kind of girl, so I ask simple kind, of questions. I don't do complicated -- complicated confuses me, and the last thing I need is to be more confused. That's a scary thought.

*** Book Review: I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression – By Terrence Real ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

Hidden male depression is the focus of this clear, compelling book by a Massachusetts family psychotherapist who specializes in working with dysfunctional men. Because our culture socializes boys to mask feelings of vulnerability, he says, they bury deep within themselves damaging childhood trauma and its ensuing depressive effects when they become men.

This strongly reasoned study starts out with an illustration of the "toxic legacy" that is passed, often for generations, from father to son, with each chapter adding another piece to the complex face. The lucid exposition of ideas is made more vivid through dramatizing. Real uses "composite" cases, so no actual person is depicted except the author himself. One of the most arresting aspects of the book is the autobiographical thread that he weaves throughout.

Real's central concern is what he calls covert depression, a pain-filled, inchoate state that may or may not eventually erupt into overt depression. The book is wise beyond its stated scope: in setting up a model for the nature, etiology and treatment of male depression, Real ends up offering -- with some gender variants -- an almost universal paradigm. Curried Lentils

This is a great tasting healthy vegetarian bowl meal that will warm you on a cool day. The flavor is even better the next day. It is a good recipe to make when you want to prepare a dish that can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated for a quick meal. Kale is not usually found in such recipes, but it is great and adds more flavor and nutritional benefits making this a complete dish with protein and vegetables.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

1 cup brown or green lentils, washed and picked over
4 cups + 1 TBS vegetable broth
1 medium onion, chopped
3 medium cloves garlic, chopped
2 medium carrots, diced into 1/4 inch pieces
2 medium celery stalks, diced into 1/4 inch pieces
2 cups finely chopped kale
2 tsp curry powder
1 15oz can diced tomatoes (do not drain)
3 TBS chopped fresh cilantro
salt and black pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Rinse lentils in strainer and sort through, removing debris.

2. Heat 1 TBS broth in medium soup pot. Healthy Sauté onion in broth over medium heat for 5 minutes stirring frequently, until translucent.

3. Add garlic, carrots, celery, and kale. Continue to sauté for another couple of minutes. Add curry powder and mix to bring out its flavor.

4. Add rinsed and drained lentils, broth, and tomatoes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium low, and simmer uncovered until lentils and vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Add cilantro and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serves 4

Healthy Cooking Tips:

Chopping the kale, carrots, and celery into the size recommended allows them to cook thoroughly in the time it takes the lentils to cook. The dish also has a better appearance when they are in proportion to the lentils. In this kind of dish, you don't want them el dente. They are better when cooked longer. Their nutrients are not lost, as they are retained in the broth.
