Lowers Blood Pressure *
A special chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower high blood pressure, a
placebo-controlled study suggests.
"This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications
given in combination," study leader George Bakris, MD, tells WebMD. "And it
seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems," adds
Bakris, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center.

Just 15 minutes a day of kicking around a ball or swimming might be enough to
keep children from becoming obese, British and U.S.
researchers said on Monday.
A study of 5,500 children who agreed to wear a motion sensor device showed that
those who exercised more were less likely to be obese -- and that short bursts
of intense activity seemed to be the most helpful.

I often think of the things I say in my books. I have to use the ideas myself
when I get sick. It's not as though I have become superhuman in managing this
illness. (I wish.) One thing I often write about is how depression could care
less about the reality of your life. You may have loving friends, a loving
family, a great partner, kids you adore, a job you find fascinating, and all of
the money in the world -- and yet depression will still make you feel that you
have nothing. It will tell you that you have nothing, and then it will make you
act as if you have nothing. Nothing tastes good, feels good, or will ever be
good again.

*** Book Review: How Doctors Think – By Jerome Groopman, M.D. ***

By far the largest number of examples New Yorker staff writer and Harvard
physician Groopman adduces to show how doctors think shows them thinking well
for the good of their patients. In the initial example, one doctor seen by a
woman with a long-standing weight-loss condition concedes being stumped and
sends her to a specialist who finds the cause of her woes and, most probably,
saves her from an early death. Both physicians are praiseworthy, the second more
than the first only because he believed a patient whom others had come to
pooh-pooh as a complainer and then thought of examining for something that the
others had missed.
The lesson? A doctor has to think with the patient, not despite or against her
or from an assumption of superior knowledge.
Subsequent chapters show doctors thinking in resistance to economic pressure by
hospitals and insurers, in thorough solidarity with parents about their
children's care, against a host of professional assumptions, and in resistance
to pestering by drug companies -- all to help patients achieve their own goals
as far as possible. An epilogue suggests a few questions patients should ask to
help their doctors think clearly and, as the last chapter's title puts it, "In
Service of the Soul." A book to restore faith in an often-resented profession,
well enough written to warrant its quarter-million-copy first printing. --Ray

Seaweed Rice
Seaweed is a super food! This simple brown rice recipe is a gem because it is a
perfect way to help you get more of it in your diet. It's easy to make, goes
with many dishes, and tastes great, making it easy for you to receive its
incredible health benefits.
Prep and Cook Time: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
2 medium pieces wakame, (2 TBS soaked and chopped)
2 TBS chopped dulse seaweed
2¼ cups warm water
½ medium onion, minced
2 large cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup long grain brown rice
salt and white pepper to taste
Directions:
1. Rinse wakame, and soak in 2½ cups warm water for about 5 minutes.
Squeeze out water from seaweed and chop. Save water.
2. While seaweed is soaking, chop dulse, onion, and garlic.
3. Heat 1 TBS of seaweed soaking water in a medium saucepan. Healthy Sauté
chopped onion over medium heat for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
Stir in garlic, rice, chopped seaweed, and soaking water.
4. Bring water to a boil on high heat. As soon as it begins to boil, reduce heat
to low and cover. Cook for about 35 minutes. Season with salt and white pepper
to taste.
Serves 4 as side dish
