* Disrupted sleep may alter pain perception *

People who continually have their sleep disrupted, whether by insomnia or a crying newborn, may become more susceptible to pain, preliminary research suggests.

In a sleep-lab study of 32 healthy young women, researchers found that those who were subjected to repeated sleep disruptions over three nights showed a change in their pain perception. Their bodies' ability to inhibit pain signals declined, and as a group, the women reported more "spontaneous" pain, such as an aching back or stomach cramps, on the days following their poor night's sleep.

* New Mammogram Guidelines for 40-Somethings: Experts Debate Research Suggesting Annual Breast Cancer Tests May be Harmful for Women under 50 *

A new report suggests the risks of breast cancer screening could outweigh the benefits for women under 50, calling into question decades-old guidelines that women begin having regular mammograms at age 40.


The new American College of Physicians study recommends that women in their 40s talk to their doctors about whether to test, since younger women with no family history of breast cancer tend to be at low risk of developing the disease.

A recent experience with one of my patients prompted me to write this cautionary tale about how using bad glucometer test strips could potentially lead to serious problems.

Harry had been on my diabetic "jump start" program for several weeks, and we were trying to get his blood sugars into an acceptable range. He was doing all the right things: he was faithfully following the diet plan I had given him, taking his medication properly, and exercising regularly. Physician Hyman ("Ultra-Prevention: The 6 Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life") delivers plenty of scientifically grounded information about weight loss myths, effective individualized strategies centered around the theme of stoking metabolism and a detailed six-week plan--complete with menus and recipes--that "will help you lose 11 to 21 pounds" in those first six weeks.

The data and prescription the author provides are far from simple, and results, if attained, are not automatic. But dogged readers will come away from the book with a thorough understanding of dieting principles, such as the timing of meals, portion size, glycemic load, phytonutrient index, the weight loss benefits of relaxation, and the optimized functioning of the thyroid.

There are straightforward principles buried in the text, such as "eat fruits and vegetables" and "move your body," plus tips for eating out (e.g., "don't be afraid to ask for substitutions in a dish," "request a 'crudités platter'... instead of the breadbasket" and "order a light drink"); adhering to these tips alone should prove beneficial. Moroccan Eggplant with Garbanzo Beans

This vegetarian dish is full of flavor, substantial, and makes a complete nutritious meal high in protein. The blended spices of garam masala make this dish rich tasting without being high in fat, and can be easily found in the spice section of your favorite market.

Prep and Cook Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

1 large onion cut in half and sliced thin
5 medium cloves garlic, pressed
1 medium red bell pepper cut in 1 inch squares
1 medium eggplant, cut into 1 inch pieces
pinch of red pepper flakes
2 tsp turmeric
½ tsp garam masala
1 15oz can garbanzo beans
1 15oz can lentils, drained
½ cup tomato sauce
1¼ cups + 1 TBS vegetable broth
½ cup raisins
1 TBS chopped fresh cilantro
salt & black pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Heat 1 TBS broth in a 10-12 inch skillet. Healthy Sauté onion in broth over medium heat for 5 minutes stirring frequently. Add garlic, red bell pepper, eggplant, garam masala, and turmeric. Stir to mix well for a minute, and add broth and tomato sauce. Stir again to mix, cover, and cook over medium low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until peppers and eggplant are tender. This is our Stove Top Braising cooking method.

2. Add garbanzo beans, lentils, red chili flakes, and raisins. Simmer for another 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve sprinkled with chopped cilantro.

Serves 4
