* Whole Grains Get Hearty Support: People Who Eat Whole Grains Are Less Likely to Have Heart Disease, Research Shows *

There's a new report to add to the stack of studies on the heart benefits of whole grains.

People who eat 2.5 daily servings of whole grains are about one-fifth less likely to have heart disease than those who skimp on whole grains, a new research review shows.

But relatively few people have made whole grains a dietary staple, note the reviewers, who included Philip Mellen, MD, of Wake Forest University's internal medicine department.

* Cholesterol Too High in Many Women: Among High-Risk Patients, Men May Be More Likely Than Women to Have Optimal Cholesterol Levels *

Women may need to put cholesterol on their list of things to discuss with their doctor, a new study suggests.

The study, published online in Women's Health Issues, shows that among high-risk patients, optimal levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol may be less common among men than women.

* Study: Web can encourage exercise *

People who spend their days in front of a computer may want to check out some fitness-related Web sites, according to a study published Monday.

Researchers found that Internet-based exercise programs worked as well as printed advice in getting sedentary adults to take up regular physical activity. One year into the study, the Internet users were getting 80 to 90 minutes of exercise each week.

* Fewer U.S. women getting mammograms: Proportion getting breast cancer screening drops for first time *

After rising steadily for decades, the proportion of U.S. women getting mammograms to screen for breast cancer has dropped for the first time, federal researchers are reporting today.

The overall rate at which women are undergoing regular mammograms fell 4 percent between 2000 and 2005, marking the first significant decline since use of the breast X-rays started expanding rapidly in 1987, the study by the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

* Prosperity *

Emmet Fox, a 1940's new thought minister, stressed the importance of setting a mental equivalent to create an abundant life, borrowing the term from chemistry and physics. If engineers can work out the equivalent of heat in order to determine how much energy it represents in the form of another energy, so can we. What does this say about the way we are perfectly capable of instituting positive change in our lives and world?

* Emotional Wellness *

Your emotions, your sentiments, your thoughts--the whole paraphernalia of the mind--are manipulated by the outside. Scientifically, it has become more clear now, but even without scientific investigation the mystics have been saying exactly the same thing for thousands of years--that all these things your mind is filled with are not yours; you are beyond them. You get identified with them, and that's the only problem.

*** Book Review: The American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet – By American Heart Association ***

-------------------------------------------------------------

About 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, which increases their risk of heart disease. The two best ways to lower blood pressure without medication are lowering sodium in your diet and controlling your weight. The American Heart Association cookbooks always help you reduce the fat in your diet--now this one helps you reduce the sodium, too.

Don't think that reducing sodium means your food will be boring and tasteless. "The American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook" shows you how to use herbs, spices, and in some cases, spirits to keep your dishes flavorful. Learn how to make ingredient substitutions so that you can adapt your favorite recipes--"seasoning blends" like Herb Seasoning, Lemon Herb Seasoning, Salad Herb Blend, or Chili Powder Blend instead of salt, for example. The 175 recipes include modifications of familiar favorites, such as Tuna Macaroni Casserole, Arroz con Pollo, Beef Stroganoff, and Meat Loaf. There are also intriguing new recipes, such as Fish Steaks with Thyme, and Chicken with Yogurt-Cilantro Sauce. There are also sauces, soups, snacks, and salads. Thirty dessert recipes give you healthier versions of all your old favorites, including Peanut Butter Cookies, Fudge, Cherry Pie, Vanilla Pudding, and, of course, Chocolate Cake. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, sodium, potassium, and calcium. --Joan Price

Red Kidney Bean Soup with Lime Yogurt

This hearty, spicy bean soup is very quick and easy to prepare. It has a lot of flavor, and is high in vegetable protein without being high in fat.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium carrot chopped in 1/2 inch pieces
1 stalk celery chopped in 1/2 inch pieces
4 medium cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups + 1 TBS chicken or vegetable broth
3 TBS tomato paste
1 TBS ground cumin
2 TBS red chili powder
1 TBS dried oregano
1 15oz can organic red kidney beans, drained
salt & pepper to taste

Lime yogurt:
˝ cup plain yogurt
1 TBS lime or lemon juice
1 TBS chopped fresh cilantro

Directions:

1. Prepare onions, garlic, carrot, and celery.

2. Heat 1 TBS broth in medium sized soup pot. Healthy Sauté onion in broth over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until translucent. Add garlic, carrots, celery, and continue to sauté for another minute.

3. Add broth, tomato paste, kidney beans, and spices. Bring to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, reduce heat to medium low and simmer uncovered for another 15-20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Let cool for a few minutes while making lime yogurt.

4. Make lime yogurt by combining yogurt, lime juice, and cilantro in separate small bowl.

5. Blend soup. Be careful to start blender on low speed so hot soup does not erupt and burn you. And make sure you don't fill blender more than half full. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reheat, and pour into serving bowls, top with a spoonful of lime yogurt, and serve.
