* Poor nutrition hurts teen lungs, study finds *

Teenagers who do not get enough of the nutrients commonly found in fruits and fish are more prone to underperforming lungs, asthma, coughing and wheezing, researchers reported on Monday.

They found that teens with the lowest intake of fruit and especially vitamin C had weaker lungs compared to the others. Teens who ate less vitamin E, found in vegetable oil and nuts, were more likely to have asthma, Jane Burns and colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health found.

* Savor the barbecue flavor -- minus the risk: Tips for low-fat summer grilling (without the unpronounceable chemicals) *

If you like to sear your steak to a crisp, you could be playing with fire.

For people who are watching their weight, grilling lean meats, poultry and fish can be a low-calorie, low-fat alternative to frying. Unfortunately, the same grill -- whether gas or charcoal -- that gives food its mouth-watering barbecue taste can also turn your burger into a toxic meal.

* Kids' Bones at Risk From Low Vitamin D: Not Enough Milk and Sunlight May Put Children's Bones at Risk of Disease *

Hours of playing video games and drinking sodas instead of milk may be putting children's bones at risk from low vitamin D levels.

A new study shows more than half of otherwise healthy children have low vitamin D levels in their blood, which may put them at risk for bone diseases, like rickets.

* Longevity *

Want to make some money, and encourage yourself to stay healthy at the same time? Bet someone you will live to 100 (or older)!

250:1 odds. I'd love to take that bet. Ten years ago Englishman Alec Holden placed a £100 bet with his bookie that he would live to 100. He recently cashed in on that $200 bet and received $50,000.

* Inspiration *

The day before yesterday was a good day, a really good day. Everything worked well. The weather was fair, the computers worked fine and orders for the "PowerPause" (my latest creation) came in at a much higher rate than usual. My world seemed peaceful, and I was filled with exhilaration. It was a good day.

Yes, the day before yesterday was the type of day I always like to see. There are many such days. Sunny, warm days, whether because of the weather or because of the warmth in our hearts, are always pleasant.

* Chiropractic Care *

One of the unfortunate effects of our golden years is suffering from age-related disorders. Some of these problems include irregular gait, poor balance, joint pain and stiffness, decreased strength and endurance, loss of muscle and bone mass, and an impaired healing rate.

*** Book Review: The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies – By Vasant Lad, B.A.M.S., M.A.Sc. ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

Lad, director of an Ayurvedic educational institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, refers to Ayurveda as "the art of daily living in harmony with the laws of nature." This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide can be considered the Ayurvedic counterpart to a conventional home medical handbook. Parts 1 and 2 present the philosophy, principles, and therapies of this 5,000-year-old Indian medical system. The therapies include diet, herbs, exercise and yoga, oil massage, breathing techniques, meditation, and such adjuncts as sound, color, and aromatherapy. Part 3, fully one-half of the guide, is an encyclopedia of remedies organized in an AZ format by symptom or condition; see references provide adequate access to the more than 100 common ailments. Numerous sidebars throughout the text provide additional information or precautions. The guide closes with line drawings of yoga postures, a glossary, resources, and further reading. --Penny Spokes
