* Study: Fear of new foods mostly genetic *

Having trouble persuading your child to eat broccoli or spinach? You may have only yourself to blame. According to a study of twins, neophobia -- or the fear of new foods -- is mostly in the genes.

"Children could actually blame their mothers for this," said Jane Wardle, director of the Health Behavior Unit at University College London, one of the authors of the study in this month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

* Back to School Means Backpack Safety *

Backpacks help kids carry schoolbooks and supplies, but they can also be harmful when overloaded and/or improperly fitted, warns the American Physical Therapy Association.

"Wearing backpacks improperly or ones that are too heavy put children at increased frisk for musculoskeletal injuries," Mary Ann Wilmarth, assistant dean and director of the transitional doctors of physical therapy degree at Northeastern University in Boston, said in a prepared statement. She's conducted a number of studies on school backpacks.

* 'Diaper-free babies' fad swells, despite critics: More parents potty training from birth by using 'elimination communication' *

Thirteen-month-old Dominic Klatt stopped banging the furniture in the verandah, looked at his mother and clasped his right hand around his left wrist to signal that he needed to go to the bathroom.

His mother took the diaper-less tot to a tree in the yard, held him in a squatting position and made a gentle hissing sound -- prompting the infant to relieve himself on cue before he rushed back to play.

* Calming Back-to-School Anxieties *

As children and teens head back to school, anxiety and dread are common feelings that may set in.

Headaches, stomach pain, nausea and temper tantrums are all possible symptoms of back-to-school anxieties.

"Some level of anxiety about going back to school or any big transition is normal for most children," said Dr. Carl Corter, the Atkinson Charitable Foundation chair in early child development and education at the University of Toronto. "And I can guarantee that if you interviewed teachers this time of year, you'd find high levels of anxiety as well."

* Fibromyalgia *

When you "google" the word fibromyalgia, you find all kinds of definitions. Here are just a few examples:

"A chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips; also may cause sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms."

* Health Goals *

Step 1

Take Stock of Your Health

The first step is to take stock of your health as it is today.

I want you to make two lists.

1. Your health as it truly is today.

2. Exactly how you want it to be 6 months from now.

* Positive Thinking *

When a person thinks positive thoughts, he is not just thinking positive thoughts; he is changing the chemicals in his body.

How is this true? Your mind affects every cell in your body. If you want to get well, you had better start thinking well thoughts. What do I mean?

*** Book Review: Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide - Presented by Burton Goldberg ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

"The Definitive Guide" is known as the Bible of alternative medicine. You may very well want to use a dictionary stand for this hefty tome; it weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Nearly 400 doctors (M.D.s, Ph.D.s, naturopaths, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, and osteopaths) contribute their cutting-edge knowledge, and the list of names is impressive. You'll find words of advice from Joseph Pizzorno, the president of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington; C. Norman Shealy, the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association; Nobel laureate Linus Pauling; Deepak Chopra; and Joan Borysenko, author and director of the Mind-Body Health Sciences in Boulder, Colorado.

After an intriguing, optimistic look at "The Future of Medicine," the book is divided into two sections. The first profiles 43 alternative therapies -- acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, qigong, hyperthermia, and yoga among them -- including their development, how they work, proven uses, and controversial or yet-to-be-proven uses, along with contact information for organizations. The second section covers 105 topics such as headaches, mental health, and allergies, along with the alternative therapies that are most likely to help alleviate pain and encourage healing. This guide is easy enough to understand to make it perfect for home reference, while it would also make a fine resource for health care providers interested in learning more about alternative medicine.

** Dr. Z (Peter Zeischegg), the Official SelfGrowth.com to Alternative Medicine, has identified this book as a valuable resource for people interested in Alternative Medicine. Please see http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Book_Review_alternative_medicine_definitive_guide.html
