* Researchers surprised so few kids take vitamins *

Less than a third of U.S. children are taking vitamin and mineral dietary supplements, according to a study published on Monday by researchers who were surprised the number was so low.

All told, 32 percent of U.S. children used a dietary supplement in the past month, based on a nationally representative survey from 1999 to 2002 that included 10,136 children age 18 or younger, the researchers said.

* Moved to tears: Workouts and waterworks -- Sometimes motion may trigger unexpected emotions *

When we think of physical activity bringing someone to tears, it's generally in connection with torn hamstrings, sore shoulders, the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.

But sometimes exercise may release a surprising slew of pent-up emotions, according to fitness instructors and psychotherapists who have seen or heard about clients crying during yoga, Pilates or other body-mind classes.

* Cat Allergy Linked to Asthma: Study Shows Allergy to White Oak and an Outdoor Fungus Also Up Allergy Risk *

More than half of asthma cases in the U.S. are linked to allergies, with sensitivity to cats responsible for 29% of allergy-related asthmas, according to new research from the National Institutes of Health.

Allergic sensitivity to cats, confirmed through skin testing, was associated with a threefold increase in asthma risk in the study, conducted using data from the nationally representative health survey, NHANES III.

* Protein a key concern for vegetarians *

It's lunchtime at Café Sunflower in Atlanta, Georgia. The kitchen is humming as the chef prepares the most popular item on the menu: sesame chicken. That's not what you'd expect at a vegetarian restaurant. But the so-called chicken is actually a seasoned soy product made to taste like the real thing. "It's a treat for vegetarians who miss meat," says restaurant owner Edward Sun.

* Anxiety *

I'm starting a teleseminar series this week. The information in Your Secret of Success is the same information I've used with my clients and other teleseminars I've taught in the past. I'm very familiar with it, so I was surprised that along with thoughts about the content for the upcoming class, I also experienced a twinge of dread. Maybe "dread" is too strong a word. Maybe it was anxiety. It isn't a good feeling, whatever I call it.

* Exercise *

What does your perfect workout mean? Is it a stroll in the park, taking a class, a rigorous hour of tennis, or using the stairmaster during your favorite TV show? Maybe it means focusing on your breath in a yoga class, stretching your muscles with pilates, or running to your favorite songs. While any of these workouts benefits your body, mind, and soul, many moms don't exercise at all. In fact, the only exercise they're getting is when they exercise their right...not to exercise.

* Heartache *

Does heartache suck? This seems like a silly question, I know! Of course it sucks; in fact any kind of pain sucks when we are in its grasp. If you are alive and human, you have certainly experienced your share of heartache throughout your life. This pain is a significant part of our experience on this planet; without it no growth personally or universally occurs. We can wish this pain away, stuff it deep down inside us, deny it completely, or we can deal effectively with these feelings and use our pain as a tremendous transformative opportunity along our journey of life.

*** Book Review: Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being - By Andrew Weil, M.D. ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

America's best-known complementary care physician offers a convincing portrait of aging as a natural part of life that can be active, productive, and satisfying. Using the examples of his mother, who died at age 93; centenarians from Okinawa and Sardinia; and myths and legends, Weil ("Eating Well for Optimum Health") explores common Western beliefs and attitudes about aging and urges readers to develop healthier perspectives.

The 60-year-old author assesses the growing and lucrative field of anti-aging medicine, takes the position that aging is not reversible, and offers many ways for readers to prevent conditions and illnesses that limit mortality and ensure well-being into the later years. He provides scientifically based information on why and how the body ages and advice on key components of good health at every age: exercise, nutrition, vitamins and herbs, and stress-relieving activities.

Much of this advice is available in Weil's previous works as well as on his Web site. The real value is Weil's courageous stand, one likely to meet resistance in a culture devoted to external indicators of eternal youth. Refreshingly, Weil embraces the notion, popular in Eastern cultures, that age brings wisdom, peace, and prosperity of a different kind.
