* Harnessing hot peppers' burn to ease surgical pain *
Devil's Revenge. Spontaneous Combustion. Hot sauces have names like that for a
reason. Now scientists are testing whether the stuff that makes the sauces so
savage also can tame the pain of surgery.
Doctors are dripping the chemical that gives chili peppers their fire directly
into open wounds during knee replacement and a few other highly painful
operations.
Don't try this at home: These experiments use an ultra-purified version of
capsaicin to avoid infection -- and the volunteers are under anesthesia so they
don't scream at the initial burn.

* Zinc Helps Elderly Ward Off Pneumonia *
Maintaining normal zinc concentrations in the blood may help prevent pneumonia
in elderly nursing home residents, a new study shows.
A team at Tufts University looked at 617 people 65 and older in 33 nursing homes
in the Boston area.
They found that those with normal blood zinc concentrations were about 50
percent less likely to develop pneumonia than those with low concentrations.

* Stretching may offer extended benefits: Study shows gains in strength and
endurance, but best timing still debated *
If stretching ranks among your list of health priorities somewhere below turning
down the volume on your iPod, a new report may give you extra incentive to
reach, bend and twist.
The study found that a regular stretching program may actually enhance
performance, making people stronger and increasing their endurance.

During Pregnancy or Childhood Also Ups Risk *
Smoking not only takes its toll on your body from the inside, but a new study
shows it also affects how your skin looks and feels on the outside.
Researchers found that smoking increases the risk of psoriasis, which causes

* Alcoholism *
You know that you have got a problem with booze when:
1. Before every party or social occasion your partner asks you "not to drink too
much tonight."
2. You feel that everyone in your company drinks too slowly or doesn't know how
to let their hair down and have a good time -- like you.

* Healthy Mindset *
In my 25 years as a healthcare practitioner, I've come to notice an important
trend in the way that most people view themselves and their health. Our current
medical mindset is fixated on treatment. When I say "our" mindset, I don't just
mean that of the professionals themselves. If a patient goes to their doctor for
a treatment, they expect their problems to be fixed or taken away. This puts the
onus of the recovery on the practitioner or therapist, and in most cases the
patient is just a passive observer in the healing process, apart from perhaps
taking some pills or receiving injections.

* Cholesterol *
Every American should be paying attention to the health of their heart, and
particularly to the health of the arteries in their heart, because
cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans, including women.
Overall, about 480,000 American women die of heart disease each year, which is
60,000 more women then men.
