* Lowered BP after "no salt added" diet *
Simply avoiding pre-salted foods and not adding salt to foods can result in a
modest but statistically significant reduction in blood pressure, study findings
suggest.
A modest reduction in dietary salt, measured by sodium content in the urine by
about 35 percent and lowered daytime blood pressure by 12.1 mm Hg systolic and
6.8 mm Hg diastolic in patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) not
taking anti-hypertensive medications, reports Dr. Javad Kojuri. Blood pressure
readings at night were slightly lower.

* Removing tonsils may not be best for kids: Surgery offers few benefits for
treating throat infections, researchers say *
Removing the tonsils of children with mild or moderate throat infections is more
expensive and has fewer health benefits than simply watching and waiting, Dutch
researchers said on Monday.
In a study involving 300 children aged 2 to 8 advised to have their tonsils out,
those who avoided surgery had fewer annual visits to doctors and lower resulting
medical costs due to fevers and throat infections.

* Students Inattentive to Food Allergies: Study Shows Many College Students
Don't Pay Attention to Their Food Allergies *
College undergraduates have a somewhat nonchalant attitude about their food
allergies that may put them at high risk for accidental exposure.
A new study of college students shows that about half of those reporting a
history of food allergies continue to eat foods that they are allergic to. Among
those who reported physician-diagnosed food allergy, 42% said they will still
eat food they know contains an allergen.

* Brain differences detected in migraine sufferers *
People who get migraines have structural differences in their brains notably in
the cortex area that processes pain and other sensory information from the body,
scientists said on Monday.
The researchers, whose findings were published in the journal Neurology, said it
is unclear whether these brain differences actually cause migraines or are
themselves caused by these severe, recurrent headaches.

* Weight Loss *
It's that time again -- the beginning of a three-month indulgence that starts
innocently enough with "fun size" chocolate candy bars at Halloween, moves
onward to turkey feasts and homemade pies, and culminates with super-sized
snacking in front of the TV at your neighbor's Super Bowl party. The holidays
are a special time of the year when we remember the important things in life,
but we often forget our weight loss goals as we spread good tiding and cheer.

* Exercise *
Everybody knows that to improve your performance you've got to work hard.
However, training hard breaks down tissue in a process called catabolism.
Physiological improvements occur during the rest period as a result of the
body's adaptation to intense training. This is the anabolic or building-up
process.
This physiological adaptation is in response to increased loading of the
cardiovascular and muscular systems and is accomplished by improving efficiency
of the heart (more blood pumped per heart beat), increasing the capillaries and
blood supply to the muscles, and increasing glycogen (energy) stores and
mitochondria (power plants) within the muscle cells.

* Feng Shui *
One of the guiding principles of feng shui is that you need to not only create a
positive energy flow from the elements located within your living space (both
inside and outside your home), but also to create a layer of protection for the
occupants of your home from the negative energy that comes from nearby sources
-- power lines, busy highways, dead-end streets, difficult neighbors, etc.
Thus, it is important to create an "embrace" for your home. In the principles of
feng shui, your house needs to have an embrace in order to properly be protected
from negative energy. This will allow you to retain the positive, inspiring
energy that you have created for your home, rather than lose it to external
forces that may be beyond your direct control.

Home" - By Linda Binns, go to

*** Book Review: The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet: A Simple 3-Part Plan to Lose
the Fat, the Wrinkles, and the Years - By Nicholas Perricone, M.D. ***
-------------------------------------------------------------
In "The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet," the father of the Inflammation Theory of
Aging reveals the role of internal micro-inflammations, caused mainly by
additive-packed foods and a sedentary lifestyle, not only in accelerated aging,
but also in unwanted weight gain. The good news he shares is: it is possible to
slow down the clock, clear the skin, and shed the pounds by following a diet of
whole foods and natural supplements, and by progressively adopting an
"anti-inflammatory lifestyle," including quality sleep and stress-reducing
activities. (Pet lovers will especially appreciate the passage on the healing
power of pets.)
If Dr. Perricone's division of high- versus low-glycemic index foods, and
healthy (Omega-3-rich) versus unhealthy fats, doesn't especially sound like
breakout news, he has to be credited for his uniquely convincing way of
(re-)laying out these dietary principles, and for incorporating them into a
global plan to achieve better health and weight loss. "Treat yourself well and
the weight will come off," he suggests. And this anti-alarmist,
anti-paternalistic, and confident delivery (he doesn't fear complimenting
competitor Tammi Flynn on her sensible "Three-Apple-a-Day Plan"), paired with
his stellar success record in the health field ("The Perricone Prescription";
"The Perricone Promise"), forces your attention.
Readers will dive effortlessly into the easy-flowing chapters, from "Breaking
the Inflammation-Fat Connection" to "The 10 Top Food Groups for Permanent Weight
Loss" (headed up with mouthwatering wild Alaskan salmon), to Perricone's
signature threefold plan, which he promises will show dramatic results in as
little as 14 days. Complete with a full 14-day meal plan, detailed nutritional
information for each recipe, a seafood safety guide, and a supplement and
organic food retailer guide, "The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet" will naturally
find its place on the eye-level shelf of your home library. --Nathalie Farage
