* Lack of Sleep Tied to Weight Gain in New Moms *

If your new baby is keeping you awake at night, take note: A first-of-its-kind study suggests that sleep deprivation after giving birth may limit a new mother's ability to shed those pregnancy-related pounds.

It's not clear why there may be a link between sleep loss and lack of weight loss. Still, the possibility of a connection is intriguing, said study lead author Erica P. Gunderson, an investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif.

* Obesity Rates In U.S. Have Leveled Off: Government Says Rate Of Disease In Adults Has Plateaued, At Least Temporarily *

The government reports that U.S. adult obesity rates seem to have leveled off - at least temporarily.

A comprehensive survey by the federal government that includes physical examinations shows about 33 percent of adult man and 35 percent of U.S. women were obese in 2005-2006.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that's more than 72 million people.

* Physical Activity Runs in the Family: Preteens May Be More Likely to Be Physically Active if Their Parents Set the Example *

When it comes to physical activity, preteens tend to follow in their parents' footsteps, a British study shows.

It's a win-win habit for parents to be physically active, note the researchers.

"Encouraging physical activity in parents may also influence their children to become more active, with the added advantage that physically active parents are healthier," they write.

* Facial Exercise *

I began teaching Facial Exercise in 1976. At that time, Isometrics were the only form of facial training known to the public. A year later, still teaching Facial Isometrics, I became interested in weightlifting and soon after stepped into competitive bodybuilding. This move called for a marked reduction in body fat. Consequently, this loss of fat had an aging effect on my face. As a Facial Trainer this was not an acceptable trade-off!

* Overeating *

You just ate a delicious meal with your friend at a favorite dive near your home, and as you get up from the table, you find your belly popping at your pants' seams. "Oh, my goodness," you say to yourself as you find yourself having overeaten and feeling slightly out of control.

What can you do when you overeat?

*** Book Review: Three Minute Therapy: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life - By Michael R. Edelstein, Ph.D. with David Ramsay Steele, Ph.D. ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

Having read many other books about CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and REBT, I can say with authority that Dr. Edelstein and Dr. Steele's book offers something new to those of us who haven't quite "gotten it" until now. Can I help myself with MY insurmountable problems in three-minute increments? Well, after only a few days with his book, I am buoyed and optimistic, and with good reason! Prior to ordering this book I was well on my way to becoming a recluse! After reading the book and doing only 4 three-minute exercises, I see my perceived "horrors" are being replaced with garden-variety frustrations and strong preferences. I am working through my aforementioned "insurmountable" problems and realizing they are not insurmountable at all! Unbelievable that I am getting this much ACTUAL help from a book!

If all this wasn't enough, I emailed Dr. Edelstein to thank him for writing his book, and he emailed me right back! I had included a bit of personal information about myself, and he actually provided a few more specific helpful ideas for me personally! Talk about a guy who loves his work! Here is an author who is 110% committed to providing people with valuable tools for dismantling our self-defeating and seemingly destructive ways. If you are confused and don't know what to do, BUY THIS BOOK. --Patti Bergin (Portland, OR)

Powdered sugar

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a 13x9x2 inch-baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Mix brown sugar, margarine and shortening in a large bowl. Stir in flour, oats, slat, and baking soda until crumbly. Press half of the mixture into the baking dish. Mix mincemeat and walnuts and spread evenly over bottom layer. Sprinkle with remaining crumbly mixture and press lightly. Bake 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. While still warm, make diagonal cuts 1 1/2 inches apart in both directions to form bars.
