* Massage Eases Pain, Anxiety After Surgery *

A 20-minute evening back massage can help relieve the pain and anxiety that often follows major surgery, new research shows.

"In patients getting massage, the acute response was equivalent to a [dose] of morphine, which was pretty remarkable," said study senior author Dr. Daniel B. Hinshaw, professor of surgery and a member of the palliative care team at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Michigan

* What Type of Tanner Are You? People Who Use Indoor Tanning Beds Fall Into 4 Categories *

What type of tanner are you? How you use indoor tanning beds -- and how often -- may reveal a lot about your skin cancer risks.

A new study suggests that people who use indoor tanning beds fall into four main types ranging from special event tanners to regular tanners, and each type may face different skin cancer risks.

* Can junk food ever really be good for you? Some new snack food health claims may be a stretch, nutrition experts say *

At a time when Americans are struggling with obesity and not eating enough vegetables, some major food marketers claim they have an answer. Keen to tap into consumer interest in healthier fare, companies are rolling out snacks sprinkled with what they say are real servings of fruits and veggies.

But nutrition experts say you shouldn't be fooled by their better-for-you promises.

* Sunlight Helps Put Lung Cancer in the Shade *

Something as common and available as sunlight may help prevent some lung cancers, researchers say.

A new study finds that lower levels of the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are associated with a higher incidence of lung cancer across 111 countries.

Still, that doesn't mean that spending more time in the sun will ever offset the risks that come with smoking, according to the study, which is published in the January issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

* Meditation *

The best time for you to meditate is the time that you will do it! It's the time that works best in your schedule, the time that is easiest for you. If you choose a time that is convenient for your lifestyle, you'll find the experience more appealing and more natural.

I consider the above is the best way to answer the question, "When is the best time to meditate for greatest benefits?" If that's a sufficient answer for you, there's really no need to read further. I hope you will, though.

* Martial Arts *

One of my students came to me recently, concerned because she read a number of posts online that slammed karate for being "a less effective form of fighting/self-defense."

How crude.

Now, I'm trying REALLY hard not to sound like an elitist karate snob here (Okay, I admit it, I am an elitist karate snob!), but I must say that those who doubt karate's effectiveness as a fighting art have never "really" studied it -- at least not in any depth. In the same breath, though, I'll also willingly say that EVERY art has its strengths and weaknesses. As the saying goes, "There are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists."

* Healthy Family *

Few of us are immune to holiday stress. It doesn't help that Thanksgiving and Christmas are so close together. For many people, it's like getting a second-wham of anxiety and disappointment before you recover from the first one at Thanksgiving.

Because our American culture still promotes the image of the happy family with the white picket fence, we often assume the ideal family exists -- even if we know that these families, too, have holiday difficulties. Holiday movies increase our disappointment. Oh, they might start out with family feuds, misunderstood children, and unacceptable mates, but all these issues get resolved by the end of the film.

Gingerbread Bars

1/2 cup warm water (120-130 degrees)
2 packages active dry yeast
1 cup warm milk (100-110 degrees)
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup molasses
3 tablespoons reduced fat margarine
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/4 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup chopped dates

Place warmed water in a large bowl and sprinkle in yeast. Stir until dissolved. Add milk, brown sugar, eggs, molasses, margarine, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and 2 cups flour and blend well. Mix in enough additional flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes). Place in a bowl sprayed with nonstick cooking spray and turn dough to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.

Punch dough down to release air, then knead in dates. Divide dough in half and then divide each half into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch stick and place on baking sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour (should double in size).
