* Fatty Fast Food, Idleness May Vex Liver: Weight, Waist Size, Fat, and Liver Enzymes Spike in Study of People Asked to Be Idle and Overeat Fattening Fast Food *

Consistently overdoing it at the fast-food counter and leading an idle life may not bode well for the liver, not to mention the waist size.

So say Swedish researchers who studied 18 lean, healthy students -- mainly medical students -- who agreed to supersize themselves for science's sake.

The students were asked to gain 5% to 15% of their body weight in a month by eating at least two daily meals at fast-food restaurants and adopting a sedentary lifestyle. Their fast-food diet featured hamburgers and other foods high in saturated animal fat. The researchers reimbursed the cost of those meals.

* Zinc helps with diarrhea in children: study *

Treatment with zinc supplements can cut the severity and duration of acute or persistent diarrhea in children, a study shows. Further research, however, is needed to determine exactly how zinc produces its anti-diarrheal effects, the researchers note in the February issue of Pediatrics.

The findings stem from a pooled analysis of data from 22 relevant studies, including 16 that focused on the benefits of zinc in 15,231 children with acute diarrhea and six that looked at 2,968 children with persistent diarrhea.

A new laser technique could enable doctors to detect certain diseases, such as lung cancer or asthma, simply by analyzing a patient's breath.

A new study shows the laser system can identify trace levels of compounds that may be signs of disease in breath samples, and companies and investors have already expressed interest in developing the device for routine use in doctor's offices, said Jun Ye, a physicist at JILA, a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of Colorado at Boulder, who led the research.

Zucchini with Cheese Spread

1 large green zucchini
1/3 cup fat free cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
2 drops red pepper sauce
1 green onion with tops, thinly sliced

Partially score zucchini peel with a fork. Slice zucchini into 1/4-inch slices. Mix remaining ingredients except green onion until well blended. Spread 1-2 teaspoons cream cheese mixture onto each slice of zucchini and place on a serving platter. Sprinkle with green onion, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm.

Makes approximately 16 pieces
