* Learn to shake the salt habit: While the FDA considers limiting sodium, it's up to you to curb your craving *

A pinch here, a dash there, could salt really be so bad? Actually, sodium is shaking out to be the next diet villain.

The average American consumes 50 percent more sodium -- as much as one and a half teaspoons of salt -- than the maximum recommendation.

Our diets have become so loaded with salt that, in response to a consumer group's urging, the Food and Drug Administration is considering whether to set limits on the amount that would be permitted in different types of foods, such as breads.

* More Women Delivering Babies by Caesarean Section *

Tiffany Leibold cried when her doctor told her she needed to have a Caesarean section.

"I cried because...I'd never had surgery and that scared me," said Leibold, 30, of North Liberty. "We kept hoping that we would be able to experience having him come on his own."

But, little Brady, now 4 months old, was breech, and a week before Leibold's due date there wasn't enough amniotic fluid to manipulate him into the right position.

* Neighborhood Influences Exercise Levels *

Your neighborhood may have a major influence on how much you exercise, according to a study that looked at data on 8,782 people in 373 Chicago neighborhoods.

The researchers found that people who live in neighborhoods with higher levels of poverty, lower levels of education, and more families headed by women are less likely than others to exercise. But this doesn't mean that poorer people are least likely to exercise, said the researchers, who found that individual income wasn't as important as neighborhood in determining exercise levels.

* Miracles *

It's always a choice. Do we accept the opinion of the "experts," or do we look for a different answer? I'm the kind of person who looks for another way around a problem or challenge. It shows up in my handwriting as a personality trait known as the "go to hell K" -- when I write a word that has the letter "k" in the middle of it, I always capitalize the letter. When I lived in Saskatoon, I wrote it like this: "SasKatoon." If you tell me something is impossible, I'll just have to prove you wrong! So, when my physician husband told me I'd just have to "live with it," the pain of Carpal Tunnel syndrome, my "go to hell K" fired up big time!

* pH Levels *

The evolution of our modern-day lifestyle continues to bring more challenges to our health and well-being. Most of our diets include so many refined, processed foods and sugar, not to mention having to deal with the chemical pollutants in the air we breathe and the food we eat. I believe these factors and excessive stress are the main reasons that the occurrence of disease continues to escalate.

*** Book Review: Curing the Cause & Preventing Disease: A New Approach to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Illness and Aging with Functional Diagnostic Medicine - By Dr. Steven Ross ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

Too many doctors cover up and treat only their patients' symptoms. The underlying cause is never found or corrected. Drugs and prescriptions only mask the symptoms. I have suffered since childhood from terrible skin rashes without ever knowing the cause or reason. Cortisone prescriptions taken for over 30 years only covered up the problem.

Through functional medicine and the diagnostic testing presented in this book, I finally found out that I had Lyme disease, mold, and other environmental toxins which have played havoc on my system all my life, creating a suppressed immune system, osteoarthritis, and the continued skin eruptions.

For the past two years I have been following Dr Ross' program of diagnostic testing, chiropractic adjustments, and nutritional supplementation, and now at 65 years of age, I feel and look the best ever. I am finally at my ideal weight, and I am amazed by my strength and endurance. I look forward to the mornings I work out with my trainer. I intend to reverse the osteoporosis I have. Playing on the monkey bars in the park and jumping on the trampoline with my grandchildren are my greatest pleasures. I do not feel 65 years old. I know it is possible to reverse this so called aging process Thank you, Dr. Ross." --Helen Kolasa, 65 years old, Patient, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Real Estate Broker
