* Olive Oil Eases Ride For Bypass Patients: Standard Component of Mediterranean Diet Protects Against Heart Surgery Complications *

If you or a family member are scheduled for heart bypass surgery, stock up on the olive oil.

That's the advice of Greek researchers who found that an olive-oil-rich diet may lower the risk of having a heart attack or stroke or dying from cardiovascular disease in the month after heart surgery.

"There's a lot of research showing that olive oil may help protect healthy people from developing heart disease, but very few studies looking at the role of olive oil in people who already have cardiovascular disease," says Dennis Cokkinos, MD, professor of cardiology at the University of Athens.

* Stubborn high blood pressure may need special care *

People who are taking three or more drugs and still have high blood pressure have a condition known as resistant hypertension that may require special treatment, the American Heart Association said on Monday.

The guidelines are intended to help doctors and patients identify and control resistant hypertension, which affects as many as 30 percent of people with high blood pressure.

* New Strength Training Advice for Kids: Get a Checkup First, Don't Overdo It, and Don't Start Before Age 7, Says American Academy of Pediatrics *

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued revised guidelines on strength training for children and teens.

Teri McCambridge, MD, chair of the AAP's Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness, says the revisions include more specific recommendations about kids and teens who need further medical evaluation prior to being cleared for strength training.

"The main groups include children with a prior history of childhood cancers, uncontrolled hypertension [high blood pressure], and congenital heart defects," McCambridge tells WebMD in an email.

* Simple regimen eliminates chronic bad breath *

Brushing twice a day with antibacterial toothpaste and using a toothbrush with a built-in tongue scraper can eliminate chronic bad breath, according to research presented today at the 2008 annual meeting of the American Association for Dental Research in Dallas, Texas.

Chronic bad breath, or halitosis, is often caused by the breakdown of bacteria in the mouth, producing foul-smelling sulfur compounds. It's estimated that 25 percent of adults suffer the embarrassment of chronic bad breath and the percentage may be as high as 50 percent in older adults.

Q: What is The Pilates Method?
A: The Pilates Method teaches a holistic, common-sense approach to efficient movement habits for whole-body health. Developed as a system or movement regime, Pilates training provides a variety of choices in both exercises and specialized Pilates equipment to help reinforce good movement habits: lying down, seated, kneeling, and standing. Everything you learn about how to move your body with the Pilates exercises can be practiced during other sport and fitness activities. New habits learned during Pilates workouts can also be reinforced during daily life activities.

* Nursing Homes *

Face it now or suffer later. If the thought of having to put your mom into a nursing home isn't a vivid picture of what you can expect happening in your own life later on, I don't know what is.

I just spent the last 3 weeks facing that situation. My aging, fiercely independent mother at the age of 88 had flatly and bluntly refused to even consider ever being "put" into a nursing home. The idea of moving near to or in with any of her children was a non-issue. She was truly convinced she could live alone and pass away in her own apartment -- simple and uncomplicated.

* Dowsing *

Have you ever walked into a home or a business and felt it had "bad vibes"? Although you probably couldn't quite put your finger on it, you knew something wasn't right. More than likely, you tried to get out of there as fast as you could because you weren't comfortable there.

Our bodies are very much in tune with what's going on in our environment, whether we can see it or not. When the environment isn't healthy, we know it at a subconscious level and react at a conscious level. This negative feeling is like a static charge that builds as we walk through the home or office building. Only instead of getting a physical shock when this charge reaches its peak, we get a shock to our psyche.
