* Deciphering Food Additives: Dietician Keri Glassman on What Several Do and How
Safe They May or May Not Be *
The ingredients of packaged foods are frequently confusing and hard to
pronounce.
They're listed on the labels on the packages.
And just because an additive is artificial doesn't necessarily mean it's bad for
you. Then again, some might be.
On The Early Show Tuesday, registered dietitian Keri Glassman went through the
fine print on some of the labels, and told which additives are probably safe and
which ones you might want to think twice about.

* Low-Salt Diet May Not Be Best for Heart *
Surprising new research suggests that a diet low in salt may be worse for your
heart than eating lots of salt, but don't start eating potato chips just yet.
"No one should run out and buy a salt shaker to try to improve their
cardiovascular health. But we think it's reasonable to say that different people
have different needs," said study author Dr. Hillel W. Cohen, an associate
professor of epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of
Medicine of Yeshiva University.

* No-Calorie Natural Sweetener on the Way: Truvia, Made From Stevia, Expected to
Debut This Year; Other Stevia Products Step Up *
Splenda. NutraSweet. Sweet'N Low. Equal. Those no-calorie sweeteners may soon
have new competition made from stevia, a shrub native to South America.
Stevia isn't new. It's been used for centuries as a sweetener in South America
and is used Japan.
But in the U.S., stevia may only be sold as a dietary supplement -- not as a
sweetener or a food additive -- due to the FDA's safety concerns. But that may
be about to change.

* "Good" bacteria may ease hay fever symptoms: study *
A probiotic drink a day may help keep hay fever away, British researchers said
on Tuesday.
A small study showed that probiotic, or "good" bacteria in a daily drink can
change the immune system's response to grass pollen, a common cause of
allergies, and balance antibodies in a way that may provide relief to people
with the condition.

* Skin Care *
A friend called me in distress. To celebrate his birthday his kids washed his
new car -- only they used Brillo scouring pads. What would you say to the kids?
We periodically replace worn out cars. Most Americans do the equivalent of a car
wash with scouring pads to their skin every day. We have to live with our skin
the rest of our lives. How you look affects how you feel and how others treat
you. Don't do the stupidest things to your skin.

Their Skin" - By Michael Brickey, Ph.D.,

* Nutrition *
The challenge of eating a nutrient dense diet that promotes healthy weight and
optimal fitness -- while at the same time trying to keep daily caloric intake at
appropriate levels for one's goals (usually fat/weight loss) -- can be one the
most difficult juggling acts to master. In working with many clients with
various daily habits and patterns, I've realized that a good number of people
can benefit from "shifting their calories" to accomplish healthy nutrition and
weight management.

Them" - By Joey Atlas, M.S.,

* Smoking *
Most people are aware of the dangers of smoking, yet despite knowing about the
damaging effects of smoking on their own health, many smokers cannot seem to
quit. They rationalize their addiction by assuming they are only hurting
themselves when they smoke. In actuality, smoking also influences the health of
people who don't smoke. Friends, children, family, co-workers, and even casual
bystanders may suffer health problems from passive smoke.

The People You Love" - By Alan B. Densky, CH,

-------------------------------------------------------------
I blew through this book in a couple of days -- much shorter than most fitness
and nutrition books. But I learned a handful of things from Joey that made an
immediate impact on my overall approach to exercise and diet.
The sections on myths and obstacles cleared up several topics for me that I've
been struggling with for years. After being 'stuck' for the last couple of
years, I was making progress again within just a few days of finishing this
book.
This book will help many people, for sure. Aside from being a bit on the 'brief'
side (I'm used to reading very long fitness books), this has many ingredients of
a best-seller. Once people get this in their hands, 'word of mouth' will spread
like wild-fire. --Cindy Tyler, Los Angeles, CA

Potato-Herb Bread
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 package rapid rise yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon rosemary
3/4 cup skim milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup instant potato flakes
2 tablespoons olive oil
Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, undissolved yeast, sugar, salt, and rosemary. Heat
milk, water, potato flakes, and oil until very warm but not boiling. Stir into
dry ingredients. Stir in enough flour to make soft dough. Knead lightly on
floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 4-6 minutes. Cover and let rest
for 10 minutes. Roll dough into an 11x7 inch rectangle. Beginning at short end,
roll dough up tightly. Pinch seams and ends to seal. Place seam side down in an
8.5x4.5 inch loaf pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Cover and let rise
about 20-40 minutes or until doubled in size. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30
minutes or until done. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.
