* Nutty Diet in Pregnancy: Asthma Risk? Study Shows Eating Nuts Daily During Pregnancy May Up Kids' Risk of Asthma *
Pregnant women who eat nuts or nut products such as peanut butter every day during pregnancy may increase their offspring's chances of developing asthma by nearly 50%, compared with women who rarely or never consume nut products during pregnancy.
The increased risk is evident for the child's first eight years, according to a new study in the July issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

* Feeling Hungry Can Make You Happy: Study Shows Increase in Hormone Called Ghrelin has Antidepressant Effect *
Contrary to the moans of many dieters, being hungry may make you happy. Or, at least, it can be a serious motivator whose evolutionary intent was to help you find dinner instead of becoming dinner.
When our bodies notice we need more calories, levels of a hormone called ghrelin increase. Ghrelin is known to spur hunger, but new research suggests this may be a side effect of its primary job as a stress-buster.

* Newest Fertility Treatment May Be a Diet *
The newest low-tech fertility treatment may be a diet, researchers said on Wednesday after learning that obese men have more abnormal sperm and make less semen.
Their findings, presented at a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain, add to recent research showing that obese women are more likely to be infertile.

* Turn Off the TV for Toddler's Sake: Researchers Found That Background TV Could Hinder Learning *
People do it every day—pay bills online, fold laundry or do homework to the soothing sound of a spinning wheel, the drone of the evening news or the canned laughter of a rerun.
Just because you've learned to tune out the television doesn't mean infants and toddlers can, according to a new study in the journal Childhood Development. According to the study, that background adult television might be a harmful distraction.

What causes Acid Reflux & Heart Burn?
Acid reflux and heart burn symptoms trouble an alarming number of Americans today and are the most common symptoms of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). It has been assumed (incorrectly) that acid reflux and heart burn are caused by an over-production of acids in the stomach. One of the most common reasons that heart burn and acid reflux occurs is that the LES (lower esophageal sphincter valve that keeps stomach acids in the stomach) weakens and allows stomach acids to back wash up into the esophagus and throat areas. Over time, this stomach acid backwash can be dangerous if left untreated because the stomach acids can destroy the delicate mucous lining of the esophagus and throat, which can lead to cancer and other serious health issues.
The following information is not meant to replace medical care with your doctor or health care provider. It is intended to enhance or improve your health care treatment program. While under my doctor’s care, I was able to incorporate the following suggestions to improve my acid reflux and heart burn symptoms and address the cause of these symptoms naturally.

I felt as if I had been pushed out of an airplane in the middle of the night
with no parachute to save me from my fall. With no way of knowing if I would
survive the plunge, I felt myself slipping into darkness. I screamed out to the
universe "Help me, save me, I want to live." Up until this moment, I thought I
was in control of my life and knew who I was. I was wrong.
If anyone had asked me to describe myself, I'd have said, why, I am people
pleasing Betsey, professional chef, restaurateur, co-author of several
vegetarian cookbooks, hunter of wild mushrooms, and someone who grows her own
food. For twenty-five years I prided myself on working ten hours a day helping
to create healthy menus to feed and nourish others. In addition to running a
vegetarian restaurant, I spent fifteen years intensely studying the therapeutics
of homeopathy, working closely with a Naturopathic doctor, and learning the
basics of good nutrition.

* Nutrition *
I love the succinct nutrition message that
Michael Pollan gives in his latest book "In Defense of Food." He suggests that
we "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Seven words that say so much. He
goes on to define food as something that your great grandmother would have
recognized as food. That calls into question many food-like substances that have
a long list of ingredients, many of which we don't recognize or can't pronounce.
I am lucky to live in Sonoma county with easy access to real food. Our grocery
stores carry an ever expanding variety of fresh, whole foods, and I appreciate
that they often give us local options. Santa Rosa has a year-round Farmers
Market. There are Farmers Markets in Cotati, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, and
Petaluma. There are also several CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) options
available, and a new local meat purchasing group. Add in the farm stands, and
all of this is real food at its best!
