* Neighborhood Walkability Linked to Weight: Obesity Risk Greater in Newer Communities *

Does living in the suburbs make people fatter?

New research suggests that it might for those who reside in neighborhoods designed more for cars than foot traffic.

People in the study who lived in the most walkable neighborhoods weighed an average of 8 pounds less than people who lived in the least walkable areas.

* Can't Sleep? Blame All Those Glowing Gadgets *

Twinkle, twinkle, little Internet router. And cell phone. And digital video recorder. And cable modem. And game console. And power strip. And TV -- even though it's turned off.

Turn off the lamps in a living room or bedroom today, and chances are good the room will still be aglow with the tiny diode lights of a half-dozen gadgets.

They can be useful indicators of what state a gadget it is in, or where it is, but they also annoy people who'd rather not have lights shining in their faces when they're trying to sleep or watch movies.

* Japan's Heart-Healthy Diet: Fish is Key: Study Shows High Omega-3 Levels in Japanese Diet Cuts Heart Disease Rates *

It might be called the Japanese paradox.

Men in Japan have similar lifetime cholesterol, blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes rates as men in the U.S., and they are far more likely to smoke.

So why is it that the rate of heart disease among men living in Japan is less than half that of men living in the U.S. and that Japanese men tend to have less artherosclerosis -- the artery-clogging plaque that leads to heart attacks and strokes?

* Weighing in on Depression: New Research Clarifies More Than Ever Basis of 'Comfort Food' *

Is ice cream an antidepressant?

Some patients with depression will eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream at night before they go to bed. They feel comforted -- at least briefly -- by the high-calorie treat. Of course, it doesn't take too many nights of this before the pounds start piling up.

New research published in the journal Nature Neuroscience this month may shed some light on the biological relationship between depression and appetite. While it does not show that Ben and Jerry's is an antidepressant, it does suggest that a brain chemical, that motivates the consumption of the ice cream, may be.

* Learning to Switch Off the Voice in Your Head *

Managing our time effectively is a challenge which many of us wrestle with on a daily basis. There are many strategies to doing this which I cover in other articles including creating effective boundaries, learning to say no and a wide range of techniques to save time and ensure you don’t duplicate effort. Once you master these techniques you would assume that you have cracked the issue of managing your time well, yet many people find the time they have free is dominated by that voice in their head.

* Back Pain *

What's the most time-consuming thing you do, day in and day out, every day of your life? Eating? I hope not. Sitting in traffic? Ditto. Watching TV? Nope. It's sleeping.

You spend between six and 10 hours a night in bed. That's one-third of your life. And when it comes to back pain, those are some of the most important hours in your day.

Sleep helps your body heal. It's really the only time your muscles can completely rest and recover. There are a ton of studies linking sleep with healing. They show that, among other things, human growth hormone and melatonin, both of which play a big role in tissue recovery and immunity, are produced during sleep.

* Forgiveness *

One of the reasons why I think people are reluctant to go through a process of forgiveness is because they just don't want to revisit the pain. Let sleeping dogs lie! Why dig up the past? Just forget it! Who needs it, for God's sake?

But research is showing that this strategy carries great risk. Unresolved hurts and resentments can give rise to cancer.

But, what if I told you that you could, in less than three hours, neutralize most if not all of the situations that have caused you pain in the past, or may be causing you pain now even, without having to speak a word about any of them? The pain of divorces, betrayals, abuse, abandonments, rejections, thefts, deaths -- all transformed in one evening without you sharing anything with anyone. Would you be interested?

* Holistic Health *

Writing has always been a part of my life in some form. From poems, plays and journaling to my writing about how sad and sick I was when I was ill. I would write about how much pain I was in, how upset I was that I could not do the things I wanted to do and just how miserable I was in general. I told myself I was "getting it out" but I now know that doing that perpetuated my conditions and me feeling unwell. Receiving my first Susan Sark book got me writing positively again. Reading "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill added more positive writing exercises. Discovering my passion for blogging and writing about health has been such a gift for me. I would love to share 5 Writing Exercises you can use to help heal your pain.
