* Burning Incense May Spark Respiratory Cancers *
Burning incense may create a sweet scent, but regularly inhaling the smoke could put people at risk of cancers of the respiratory tract, researchers reported Monday.
In a study of more than 61,000 ethnic Chinese living in Singapore who were followed for up to 12 years, the investigators found a link between heavy incense use and various respiratory cancers.

* Alexander Technique Eases Back Pain *
The Alexander technique, a little-known type
of physical therapy designed to reduce chronic pain, is more effective at
reducing back pain than exercise alone or massage therapy, according to a new
study.
The study, published in the journal BMJ, tested different back pain
treatments using patients from 64 general practices in England. A total of 579
patients with chronic pain or recurrent low back pain participated; 144 were
given "normal care," 147 had massages, 144 took six Alexander technique lessons,
and 144 took 24 Alexander technique lessons. Half of each group was also
prescribed an aerobic exercise plan, primarily walking.

* How to Clear Confusion from Food Allergy Warnings *
It's one of the biggest frustrations of life with food allergies: That hodgepodge of warnings that a food might accidentally contain the wrong ingredient.
The warnings are voluntary -- meaning there's no way to know if foods that don't bear them really should. And they're vague: Is "may contain traces of peanuts" more reliable than "made in the same factory as peanuts?"
Now health officials in the U.S. and Canada are debating setting standards, amid increasing concern that consumers are so confused they're starting to ignore the warnings.

* Breastfeeding vs. Breast Cancer Risk? *
Certain types of breast cancer may be rarer among women who breastfeed their babies for at least six months.
That finding comes from a new study published in today's advance online edition of Cancer.
The researchers, who included Amanda Phipps, MPH, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, pooled data from two breast cancer studies that together included nearly 2,500 women aged 55-79 in Washington state. The group included 1,140 women who had had breast cancer.

* Cocoa Compound Boosts Brain's Blood Flow *
It's news we all want to hear -- that eating chocolate is good for you. Well not quite, but an ingredient in some chocolates is showing promise in promoting blood flow to the brain.
The ingredient is flavanols, which are nutrients found in cocoa. Flavanols are considered to act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories on cells. These chemicals can protect cells and tissue from damage, which in turn protects against heart disease and cancer.

* Arthritis *
A few months ago I started to suffer from
severe hip pain, which I later discovered turned out to be the end stages of
osteoarthritis. It often kept me awake at night so the horrible nightmare that
suddenly loomed one dark night was probably the last thing I wanted at that
time!
I woke myself up screaming and suddenly felt frightened and all alone...
...and was overcome by a wave of feeling that coursed through my whole being. I
turned over to reach out for the comforting arms of my partner only to find he
wasn’t there to give me the hug of reassurance I so badly needed at that time.
In fact I already knew he had gone to sleep over at his mother’s place that
night, but not being there when I really needed him, triggered something in
me...deep emotional pain from the past.

* Fat Loss *
Most people never see permanent weight loss success in a really short period of
time the first time they try. As with all things in life, there is a learning
curve.
A Personal Story
(Name changed to protect the real individual's privacy)
Just a few short years ago, Joan came to me frustrated with all the diets out
there. Had lost some weight but was slowly regaining it after deciding dieting
was just not in the realm of possibility for her any longer.
Together, we immediately, began a journey to look at what was really going on
under the surface. What we found shocked her.

* Nutrition *
Eating healthy in this day and age can
indeed be quite difficult with all of the temptation that is out there today,
but it is having the determination and the will-power to stick to it that will
see you through. As mentioned in the title of this article, there are five types
of acidic foods to stay away from, each of which will be discussed as followed.
We will be covering each of these types: dairy, meat and poultry, processed and
frozen foods, refined sugar and products made with refined sugars, and
beverages. This article provides the latest information on 5 highly acidifying
foods.

*** Book Review: The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss
and Better Health for Life - By Arthur Agatston and Joseph Signorile ***
-------------------------------------------------------------
Five years ago, with the publication of The South Beach Diet, renowned Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston set out to change the way America eats. Now he has an even more ambitious goal: to change the way America lives by helping Americans become fitter as well as thinner and healthier...for life. In the all-new The South Beach Diet Supercharged, Dr. Agatston shows you how to rev up your metabolism and lose weight faster while following the proven healthy eating principles of the original diet: choose good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.
Collaborating with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami, Dr. Agatston presents a cutting-edge, three-phase workout that perfectly complements the three phases of the diet itself. Based on the latest exercise science, this ease-into-it fitness program combines low- and high-intensity interval exercise (with a focus on walking) and functional core body-toning exercises. The result: you'll look fitter and you'll burn more fat and calories all day -- even at rest.
Also included is the latest nutritional research on how specific foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of phytonutrients help keep you healthy; new and expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy; taste-tempting Meal Plans for phases 1 and 2; and dozens of easy-to-prepare new recipes, including Eggs Frijoles, Chock-Full-of-Veggies Chili, Roasted Tomato Soup, Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, and South Beach Diet Tiramisu. In every chapter you'll find inspiring success stories from real-life South Beach dieters and plenty of effective weight loss tips. And as an added bonus, Dr. Agatston answers the questions you've most often asked him about the diet since the original book was published.

*** Healthy Recipes ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

The halibut in this recipe is high in protein and low in calories. Its mild flavor is complemented by the spicy taste of the salsa. You also get the added boost of vitamin A from the tomatoes and heart-healthy monounsatured fats from the avocados in the salsa. One serving provides 90% of the daily value (DV) for selenium, 85% DV for vitamin D, and 75% DV for protein.
Prep and Cook Time: 15 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients:
Directions:
1. Press garlic
and let sit for 5 minutes to bring out its health-promoting properties
2. Mix all ingredients except halibut and 1 TBS lemon juice and set aside.
3. Heat 2 inches of water in the bottom of a steamer and let it come to a boil.
4. Rub halibut with 1 TBS lemon juice and season with a little salt and black
pepper. Place in steamer and steam 10 minutes for every inch of thickness. (5
minutes if 1/2 inch etc.)
5. Place on plate, and top with salsa.
Serving Suggestion: Serve with Mexican Corn on the Cob and Green Salad.
Healthy Cooking Tips:
It is best to choose halibut that is fresh and at least 1 inch thick. Because
halibut can become dry when cooked, the thicker cuts help to retain moisture.
It's important not to overcook halibut. To check for doneness, insert the tip of
a knife into the center. It will flake, but still be moist when it is cooked to
perfection. In fact, cook it slightly less than desired doneness, as it
continues to cook after removing from the heat. Unlike the other salsas, this
one is served with a chunky texture. Chop everything fine except the tomatoes
and avocado. If the avocado is very ripe it will make the salsa look mushy.
Choose an avocado that is ripe, yet still has a slight firmness. You will have a
more attractive salsa.
