* Acupuncture Beats Drugs to Treat Hot Flashes *
Acupuncture works as well as a drug commonly used to combat hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms that can accompany breast cancer treatment, and its benefits last longer, without bad side effects, researchers said on Monday.
They tested acupuncture, which began in China more than 2,000 years ago and involves inserting needles into the body, against the Wyeth antidepressant Effexor, for hot flashes in breast cancer patients.

* How Holistic Doctors Handle Their Allergies *
Allergies are an equal opportunity annoyer -- and even doctors are bothered by them.
While conventionally trained physicians might seek relief from an over-the-counter product or prescription medication, doctors who practice integrative medicine -- using both traditional and alternative treatment approaches -- may ease their stuffiness and watery eyes without resorting to medicine. They might reach for something in the supplement aisle or use other natural strategies to soothe their seasonal symptoms.

* America's Healthiest Schools Ranked *
The average American child spends nearly 12,000 hours in school, from kindergarten through 12th grade. That's a big chunk of time during which he or she can develop good (or bad) health habits.
Happily, schools today are recognizing the many benefits of a healthy head start -- and Health magazine wants to recognize the ones that are doing an A+ job. To find the health stars in America's vast public school universe, we asked education officials in every state for their nominations; we scored those based on how they measured up to some tough criteria. Congratulations to all of the inspiring winners!

* Humble Honey Kills Bacteria *
If you start poking around into the history of honey, you'll find the stuff is revered in many early cultures.
Honey is mentioned in the Bible, it was used to preserve corpses by the ancient Egyptians, was considered sacred during the time of Buddha, and the prophet Muhammad espoused its potential healing properties.
But it's only been in recent times that science has been able to prove and explain the benefits that honey holds.

* Serious Problems in Psychotherapy Require Serious Medicine *
As a
psychotherapy patient, do you wonder whether the work you and your therapist are
doing will succeed and produce lasting results? You may like, even admire, your
psychotherapist, but how do you know that as a result of his or her work you
will achieve the goals for which you came to treatment?
Patients frequently remain in the dark about whether treatment is actually
succeeding. The solution to this dilemma is a treatment considerably broader in
scope than conventional psychological and psychiatric therapy. This treatment
embodies proven techniques for accurately assessing the nature and severity of a
psychological problem and for monitoring treatment progress. In using these
methods, therapist and patient work collaboratively to track progress,
continually providing feedback to each other.

What
would you do if you had a sudden health crisis? Do you think you really know how
you would handle your life changing in seconds? What would you do first? What
would you think? How would you cope with the onslaught of unexpected bad news
and painful feelings?
My life changed in seconds when I was informed about just such urgent health
condition in 1998. This is an account of my personal healing journey.

Dry
skin looks dull and lifeless due to lack of moisture. Well hydrated skin glows
and exhibits a healthy look. Wrinkles develop at an early age due to prolonged
dryness of skin. Dry, rough, and wrinkled skin gives an aged appearance. Dry and
cracked skin harbor microbes and cause fungal infections. Excess drying of skin
leads to dry eczema.
Hence a proper care should be taken to increase the moisture level of skin and
prevent drying. Soft, smooth, and wrinkle free skin gives young and healthy
look.

* Nutrition *
As most
people know, nutritional eating is a major component to living a healthy
lifestyle. For instance, consuming an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables
daily is not only nourishing, but will most often improve our quality of life
too.
This not only applies to adults. Nutrition and exercise for children is more
critical today than ever before.
But there are many misconceptions about supposedly "healthy" products. We've
been told time after time to eat certain foods because they're good for us. Or,
we've been misinformed about certain additives in foods that harm our bodies.
Here's a list of seven common misconceptions related to healthy eating.

*** Book Review: The Right Weigh: Six Steps to Permanent Weight Loss Used by
More Than 100,000 People - By Rena Greenberg ***
-------------------------------------------------------------
Rena Greenberg has written an emotional masterpiece for every person who has harbored a life-long "love/hate" relationship with food! I'm a licensed psychotherapist and approached reading this book with a good degree of skepticism. Intellectually, I understood all the techniques outlined in the book. Imagine my delight to find out this book wasn't about "diet" at all! It wasn't about "fat" or "thin", it was about ME.
Following the heart-centered exercises throughout the book has helped me become
healthier, happier and 32 pounds lighter without much effort at all. The best
part: I eat what I want, as much as I want and still lose weight!
This book is a great read, contains great intellectual and emotional information
and is a must for every person who is willing to spend 30 minutes a day on
themselves.
Rena Greenberg is a lifestyle revolutionary!

The beautiful color of beets also reflects their rich concentration of phytonutrient antioxidants, which help protect against the damage to cellular structures and DNA that can be caused by free radicals. They are also rich in folate, and one serving of this recipe contains only 57 calories. Enjoy!
Prep
and Cook Time: 20-35 min depending on marinating time
Serves 4
Ingredients:
Directions:
1. Fill the bottom of a
steamer with 2 inches of water.
2. While the water is coming to a boil, wash beets, leaving 2 inches of tap root
and 1 inch of the stem on the beets. Cut beets into quarters. Do not peel.
3. Steam covered for 15 minutes. Beets are cooked when you can easily insert a
fork or the tip of a knife into the beet. Although some of their colorful
phytonutrients are lost to the steaming water, there are plenty of nutrients and
color left in the beets.
4. Peel beets by setting them on a cutting board and rubbing skin off with a
paper towel. Wearing kitchen gloves will help prevent staining your hands.
5. Transfer to a bowl. It is best to toss the beets with the remaining
ingredients while they are still hot.
6. Let them marinate for at least 15 minutes for fuller flavor.
Healthy Cooking Tips:
If you have time to plan ahead, this recipe actually tastes better the longer it
marinates. The beets will soak up some of the marinade, so you might want to add
a little more after they sit for awhile.
