** THE TOP 10 TIPS for PREPARING for SUMMER - written by Lynn Berger **
------------------------------------------------------------

1. Get into shape physically.

The summer is a great time of year to spend doing outdoor activities with your kids. If you are well conditioned, both you and your children will get more out of these activities.

2. Make yourself available.

At this time of year you will have more obligations. Communicate frequently about what dates you have obligations for - like graduations, birthdays, picnics, etc.

3. Plan vacations well in advance.

Besides getting better rates, you will assure your family of getting accommodations you may miss by hesitating or delaying a decision.

4. Analyze your child's wardrobe.

It usually has been one full year since your growing child wore t-shirts and shorts on an every day basis. In order to assure comfort and that clothes fit, you should check out the closets.

5. Enroll your child in camp before the deadline.

Keeping your child active in the summer will prevent boredom and they will have a lot of fun playing and making new friends.

6. Take your child to the pediatrician.

Many sleepaway camps and daycamps require a physical examination before your child can participate. A doctor may also give your child shots and the prevention to make it a happy, healthy summer.

7. Go natural.

The summer is a great time of the year to do things like go to the park, bicycle ride, roller blade and go to the beach. All these activities provide great fun and cost next to nothing.

8. Buy sunscreen.

Consult your doctor for the appropriate SPF for your child. A sunburn is no fun and can be quite painful and dangerous.

9. Take a poll.

Ask your kids to plan in advance any special activities or events they would like to partake in in the summer. It will give you advance planning time and will get your kids thinking about ideas.

10. Have fun and relax.

This is a great time of year to take vacations and spend quality time with your kids.

** TEN REASONS WHY PEOPLE FAIL – written by Gary Blair **
----------------------------------------------------

1. Taking Action Without Planning

When it comes to your goals and future, impulsiveness is the mother of regret. Considerable thought must be given to the ends as well as the means of your strategy.

2. Planning Without Taking Action

Endless preparation is worse than action without planning. Accept that things will never be perfect. Questions will forever exist. Plan well and launch!

3. Unrealistic Timeframes and Expectations

Life is a process not an event. Nothing great was ever built easily. Exercise wisdom and learn to be patient. Unfortunately most things in life take longer and cost more than the best-laid plans anticipate.

4. Reasons "Why" Are Unclear

Why you want to achieve a goal is more important than the goal itself. Before taking action on anything it is imperative that you ask yourself this key question: "Why do I want to achieve this goal?"

5. Denial of Reality

It's far easier to deny reality than it is too accept it. And far too many people take the easy way Success is information dependent, when we deny reality for whatever reason, we devalue the integrity of our information, thus ensuring failure.

6. Conflicting Values

When we have not clarified our reasons why or defined what success means to us personally, we operate on someone else's definition. When that occurs values are sure to be in conflict and progress is short- circuited.

7. Diffusion of Energy Attempting to do too much is a recipe for mediocrity.

Rather than doing an excellent job at a few chosen goals we spread our energies over a vast terrain and diffuse what matters most; time and energy.

8. Lack of Focus Success demands focus.

It is the hallmark of all truly great people. Your ability to get and remain focused or lack there of is perhaps the key determinant of your success.

9. Trying To Do It All Alone Nobody goes through life alone, we all need the cooperation and assistance of others.

Put your pride aside and learn to ask for help when you need it. Learn to leverage and share knowledge for your own well being as well as for others who are dependent upon your cooperation.

10. Fear Of Failure Fear of failure is The "Grand Daddy" of them all.

Far too many dreams have suffocated and died because of it. Fear resides where knowledge does not exist; the more you know about anything the less intimidated that you feel. Replace your fears with knowledge and watch your performance leap.

** BOOK REVIEW: The Business Plan for the Body : Crunch the Numbers for Successful Weight Loss -- Manage Your Metabolism by Eating the Right Way -- Invest in the Only Workout You'll Ever Need- written by Jim Karas**
----------------------------------------------------

Are you unhappy with your body? Do you feel like you exercise and diet constantly but don’t get results? If you’re still struggling — or if you’re simply ready to get motivated and get fit once and for all — Jim Karas has the only weight-loss and exercise plan you’ll ever need: The Business Plan for the Body.

Karas is a Wharton-trained entrepreneur turned fitness professional whose CEO clients pay him $10,000 a week for his diet and exercise consultations. Now he’s going to share his highly valued secrets with you. Jim’s clients shed pounds and shape up because they use a tried-and-true tool: the principles found in a classic business plan. What works for them will work for you, and you don’t need to be a corporate mogul to make it happen. Jim will teach you how to:

Create your mission statement: Take a simple but powerful first step toward reaching your weight-loss and fitness goals

Research the competition: Discover why today’s hottest diet and exercise programs don’t work for the long term, but why The Business Plan for the Body works for a lifetime

Do the numbers: Calculate your basal metabolic rate (calories in minus calories out equals weight loss) — do the math to dramatically improve how your body looks and feels

Jim also explodes some common but popular myths about fat, food, and fitness (for instance, why aerobic exercise isn’t the key to weight loss) and offers up simple eating guidelines and an exercise solution you can live with for the rest of your life. The Business Plan for the Body provides everything you need — from motivation to information—to achieve your goals for weight loss and fitness, and most important, to maintain your success.

Making a difference: Student's petition pushes the positive

"Brittany Pilarski, a fourth-grader at Barhitte Elementary School, said she was sick of hearing bad things about students in the news. So she decided to do something about it.

Brittany, 9, created a petition to help students take pride in Bentley and other school districts. Her petition calls for newspapers to publish one good story a month about students, and TV stations to do so once a week. She said she was upset the media didn't cover a play her class presented and a science fair at the school. "The only time we hear about schools is when they did something bad," she said. "We may have a few troublemakers, but we have good kids and this is a good school."

"More than 10 million self-employed or salaried Americans now work at home. And while it might seem that doing so would make healthy eating easy, that’s not always true. Along with stay-at-home parents and retirees, those with a home office find that a looser schedule and easy availability of food pose a whole new set of challenges to good nutrition."
