These words change my life. They inspire me with belief in myself.
This belief in what I can do sustains me. It sustains me through many
crucibles. Through many crucibles in the years that follow.
Here's how it happens: At 17 I quit high school. It's not that I want
to quit in my senior year. It's my father. He ups and leaves us flat with
no notice. No notice and no money. The "us" is my Mom and my 2 little
sisters. There's no means of support. No cash to pay the rent. And the
food . And all the rest.
So I take the noble action. I quit high school. I go to the nearest
large factory. It happens to be RCA, in Camden, New Jersey. I lie about my
age. They believe me. They believe me because they need people now. There's
a war on. They only know they need people to do the essential work. They
need people now.
An electronics enthusiast, I bump myself up. Up and off the assembly
line in just a few weeks. I get myself assigned to the Test Cage. The Test
Cage is electronically isolated from the rest of the world. No signals can
enter. No signals can leave.
I love working with the CRT, the various meters and the alignment
tools. It's a Union Shop. Did you ever work in a Union Shop? If so, you'll
recognize what follows. The Shop Steward works along with everybody
else. And he watches everything with the object of protecting and preserving
jobs.
My job is to test and align electronic equipment destined for the USA
Department of Defense. The Time and Motion Study folks have established
45 minutes as the allowed time to complete one procedure.
After a few weeks, I figure out how to do this job in 15 minutes. And I
do. Instead of turning out 12 procedures per 8 hour shift, I do 36
complete procedures. The Shop Steward has a little talk with me. I
resist his recommendation that I slow down. There's a war on, I tell him.
He's not happy. So he gets 2 engineers, guys with white shirts and
neatly pressed navy blue trousers, (You know the type, their suits come with 2
pair of pants!) to visit me. They don't just visit. They bring their
yellow legal pads. They stand behind me. They stand behind me for 2
full shifts. When one has to visit the bathroom, the other watched me with
eagle eyes.
After the 2 shifts, 16 hours of observing my every move, they file a
Report. In essence, they say, "the kid's right." (I, a late bloomer,
was not even shaving yet.) The kid's right! This means they rewrite the
procedure. Now my every motion becomes the prescribed motion for the
whole 30-person group.
And they require someone to train the other in this simpler procedure.
Who do ya' think they pick. I'm the only one available. So, at 17 I
show the 29 others what to do and how to do it.
Wait, there's more. They bump me up. off the line, to new
responsibilities. I'm now the Troubleshooter for the whole group. This
means when someone runs into a problem, they call on me to solve it.
When I can't figure out what to do, I go to the Shift Supervisor, Dick
Baker. He's from Green Bay, Wisconsin. His religion is football. The
Green Bay Packers are his heroes. His Gods. Every other word out of his mouth
is Green Bay. (You've met the type.) He always solves the problem.
Here's the scene: I'm hunched over a work station. I'm staring down the
CRT and the perplexing problem. Dick Baker, a few feet away, quietly
speaks to the person he's with: "That young Burt is so good at what he
does--he never has to call on me for help any more."
I'm moved by those words. (They prove to be magic words.) Someone
believes in me. Someone believes I'm better than I know I am. Maybe he's right.
Let's find out.
I scrunch down addressing the problem. The sweat pours from my brow. I
break through and solve the problem. I never have to call on Dick Baker
for help ever again.
Because someone believes in me, I tap into a power I never knew was
there. Now I believe in myself. I believe in my power to transcend perceived
limits. This proves to be my workplace miracle!
Ever since that tender moment, thanks to Dick Baker, thanks to one
person believing in me, I've shattered perceived limits again and again.
"Think you can, think you can't, either way you're right." So said
Henry Ford. And you, dear Reader, can transcend the perceived limits of your
life.
Simply believe in yourself and your power. Then do what you must to
create the conditions and circumstances you desire. That's all it takes.

*** BUILDING Attitude Awareness. The FIRST STEP to BUILDING ATTITUDE

Got attitude? "YES!" You all scream. A positive one? "YES!" You all scream.
Wanna bet?
I'll bet every one of you "thinks" you have a positive attitude, and
the same amount of you have NEVER taken a course in it.
Let's go a bit deeper. How much of your success is dependent on your
positive attitude? The answer is somewhere between "lots" and "all."
So 80-100% of your success is dependent on your positive attitude, yet
you've had no formal training. OK, suppose you needed surgery and I
recommend a surgeon with no formal training, but "thinks" he can do a
great job. Get it?
You can start by reading and studying these four books:
1. Think and Grow Rich -- Napoleon Hill
2. How to Win Friends and Influence People -- Dale Carnegie
3. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living -- Dale Carnegie
4. The Power of Positive Thinking -- Norman Vincent Peale
Me personally? I read two pages from these books every day. I've been
doing attitude-reading for fifteen minutes a day for thirty years. I
don't know if it's working yet. I'm going to do it another thirty years, and
then that's it, I'm going to quit.
If you want wealth, first build a wealth of knowledge.
I also recommend that you enroll in the nearest Dale Carnegie program.
Carnegie courses are timeless and will provide a great attitude
foundation.
But I know you. You want it NOW and you want it FREE. OK, here are 20.5
attitude gems I've picked up along the way that I recommend you read,
cut-out, copy, share with others, post on your wall, and study in a way
that you implement into your "thought and expression" process. They are
not in "course" format. They are mental snacks to chew on and digest.
1. Change your input to change your attitude. If you seek a positive
mind, you MUST expose yourself to positive information and hang around
positive people. If you want to achieve "positive" you have to surround yourself
with it and live it.
2. You were born to win - but you must plan to win, prepare to win,
then you can expect to win. (a famous Zig Ziglar quote)
3. The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare to win.

4. You will get whatever you want if you help enough people get
whatever they want. (a quote that many claim to have said - it doesn't matter
who said it -- just live it)
5. Make every day as productive as the day before you go on vacation.
That's a day that EVERYTHING gets done.
6. Ignore people who tell you "you can't." (except your boss). People
will try to rain on your parade because they have no parade of their own.
7. If you have nothing nice to say about someone, say nothing. (a
famous quote said by your mother)
8. Don't dwell on (whine about) the problem, concentrate on the
solution. Resolve how you can, not lament why you can't.
9. Forgive and go forward. Grudge BLOCKS positive. Until you clear the
past you are destined to repeat it.
10. Self talk equals self performance. Look at any athlete -- self talk
is a crucial part of their expected positive performance.
11. What is the picture you have of yourself? That is what you will
become. Spend 15-minutes a day focusing on a positive picture.
12, You will hear the word no 116,000 times in your lifetime. Try
converting just 1,000 of them to a "yes," and the world is your oyster.
13. What you do off the job determines what you are likely to do on the job. Uh oh.
14. Strengthen your weaknesses and strengthen your strengths at the
same time. Combine positive with negative for better personal development results
15. Failure is an event, not a person. Think of failure as "it," not "me."
16. It's not what happens to you.It's what you do with what happens to
you. Attitude manifests itself in your RESPONSE to events.
17. Every obstacle presents an opportunity. If you're looking for it.
"Revel" and "lament" are choices. Your choices.
18. Hard work makes luck. Nothing affects positive circumstance and
results more than hard work.
19. How many of your problems are cured with 10 grand? A question my
dad once asked me as I lamented my problems. If money makes your problem go
away, attitude makes them go away as well.
20. It's not what you say. it's how you say it. The tone of your
verbiage determines the atmosphere of your environment.
20.5 Resign your position as general manager of the universe. Don't try
to solve (butt into) other peoples problems, util YOU are problem free.
And then there are the "Attitude Aha's." Many (many) years ago I was
riding down the road listening to a tape by Earl Nightingale (one of
the founding fathers of personal development). On tape 4 of his legendary,
but unavailable, series "Direct Line" the topic was enthusiasm.
"Enthusiasm" Earl said, "Comes from the Greek "entheos" meaning the God within."
AHA! All of a sudden all the other quotes and advice made sense. The
strength of self-belief is within your own spirit, if you hunger for the
feeling.
And these words are food for yours.

** BOOK REVIEW: The Mind-Body Makeover Project: A 12-Week Plan for
Transforming Your Body and Your Life -by Cheryl Richardson **

Nutrition and exercise are only two pieces of the puzzle of how to get
fit and lose weight, writes Michael Gerrish. The other "UFOs"
("unidentified fitness obstacles") are barriers to getting fit. These might involve
sleep, work addiction, food allergies, or a number of medical or
emotional conditions or lifestyle issues.
Gerrish, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and
psychotherapist, gives a self-test to see which of the 58 UFOs are yours and describes
how you can conquer each one. He includes exercise information, with
descriptions and illustrations of recommended strength training and
stretching exercises, and a general diet plan. He also describes energy
block acutherapy, a self-help breathing and tapping sequence to treat
fears, addictions, cravings, self-sabotage, and post-traumatic stress.

Asthma Drug Helps Infant Lung Infection
"New research suggests that a pill normally used to treat asthma and
other breathing difficulties may also ease breathing in infants who develop
potentially serious lung infections.
All of the children, who were between 3 months and 3 years old, were
hospitalized as a result of bronchiolitis, an infection of the lung's
small airways. After bronchiolitis, infants are in danger of developing
other potentially serious symptoms that resemble asthma.
The researchers discovered that children given the drug montelukast
(Singulair) during a four-week period experienced six symptom-free days
and nights, while infants who received an inactive, or placebo,
treatment, were free of symptoms on only one day and night during the study
period."

"A close chemical relative of vitamin A restores the function of a gene
that can protect against lung cancer development. Around half of all
newly-diagnosed cases of lung cancer occur in former smokers. The
damage that smoking inflicts on the lungs does not disappear as soon as people
