*** STRESS MANAGEMENT - PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION ***
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Progressive relaxation has been a standard stress management technique for some 70 years. It has been found effective in the relief of muscular tension, pain, anxiety, depression, and may even reduce high blood pressure and pulse rate.

The technique consists of the sequential tightening and relaxation of various muscle groups. When tensing a particular muscle group one can develop a clearer sense of his or her muscle tension, an indication of bodily and personal stress. By relaxing that particular muscle group, a person can get a clearer sense of what relaxed muscles feel like.

The muscle groups typically trained in this technique are:

-- hands, biceps and forearms;
-- forehead, neck and face;
-- stomach and back muscles;
-- legs, feet and toes

The procedure simply involves a tightening and relaxation of these muscle groups in sequence. One tightens each group, holds it tight for five to ten seconds, and then loosens it while exhaling deeply. Relax for 30 seconds before repeating the procedure three or four times. In several weeks increased muscular relaxation may be noticed.

*** CLARIFYING YOUR GOALS ***
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weeks section on goal setting will focus on the importance clarifying your goals. Successful goal setting and achievement requires written specific goals. Pick one of your top goals, ideally your top goal, and begin by expanding on it. The expansion process includes the following:

1 Write down your goal as clearly as possible. Writing your goals is a critical component in achieving your goal.

2 Be as specific as possible when writing your goals. If you want to make money, write down exactly how much money. If you want a new job, write exactly what type of job. The more specific, the better. Try to avoid ambiguity.

3 Set goals that are measurable. Make your goal as tangible as possible. If your goal is to learn to relax, or to become more loving, try to turn it into something more tangible.

4 Set exact deadlines for your goal. When do you want to accomplish this goal? Be specific. For example, I want to be the Director of Marketing by January, 1999.

5 Your goals should be something that you can control. Winning the lottery is out of your control and not a worthwhile personal goal.

Next week, tips on planning.

*** TIME SAVING TIPS AT THE OFFICE ***
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Voicemail - keep a written phone log of incoming calls with the person's name, number and message. Delete the message on voicemail and then check off on your log when the call has been returned or handled. This will avoid going through and listening again to several messages in order to find one.

2. E-mail - Read it ONCE. Respond to it, print it if you need to refer to it and file it. Then delete it.

3. Keep an "emergency stash" in your desk. (i.e., sewing kit, bandaids, pantyhose(if applicable), shoe polish, birthday cards …) This will avoid the need to run out if there's a little crisis before a meeting or if you forgot someone's birthday!

*** RECOMMENDED BOOK OF THE WEEK ***
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our recommended book of the week is "Motherless Daughters: The Legacy of Loss", by Hope Edelman.

An exploration of grief, growth and self-identity. With the assistance of the many women who contributed their personal journeys for the writing of this book, Hope Edelman has created a portable support group for women of all ages who have experienced the loss of their mother. We feel this is an important book that provides a place to find and compare others experiences. It offers tremendous insight to past and future events related to the topic. A worthwhile read for anyone
wishing to gain comfort and/or knowledge regarding this specific grieving process.
