*** THE TOP 10 SECRETS FOR HEALTHY, POSITIVE and PRODUCTIVE COMMUNICATIONS ***
----------------------------------------------------
Everything we do in life requires communication with others. Success often hinges on how
well we understand others and how well they can understand us. The greatest idea in the
world is nothing until it is shared and developed. Here are the top ten secrets for
successful communication. People will appreciate you more when you use them.
1. Check your motive.
Ask yourself, "What is my motive for saying or writing
this?" If your motive isn't positive or productive, you cannot expect a positive or
productive response.
2. Get to the point.
If you cannot summarize your message in 60 seconds, you may not
understand it well enough to communicate it in more detail.
3. Stick to the point.
Make it clear where you are going with your communication and
stay with it. People do not like to be kept in the dark unless it's a mystery movie.
4. Remember that your body speaks volumes.
Up to ninety percent of communication is visual. When you speak,
your listeners are watching to be sure that your facial and body clues match what you are
saying.
5. Check your tone.
The written word, in particular, is often much more harsh than
intended. Let important written messages sit for a day before you send them and read them
for tone as well as content.
6. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
People, while trusting by nature, are very perceptive and can
find any hint of insincerity or lack of credibility.
7. Listen first for understanding.
To listen effectively you must CARE for those you're listening
to: Concentrate - focus on the speaker; Acknowledge - through body language, nod your head
occasionally or say uh-huh;, Respond - ask questions for clarification and interest; and
Empathize - share in their emotions and feelings.
8. Practice, practice; practice.
Writing and speaking, as arts, improve with study and practice.
9. Get help with tough communications.
Bounce your ideas off friends and/or associates. They can provide
a clarifying perspective for you.
10. Simplicity is better. Don't hide behind language.
Complex, wordy communications may leave understanding behind in
an alphabetical dust. Choose clarification over obfuscation.

*** BOOK REVIEW: Who Moved My Cheese? : An Amazing Way to Deal With Change in Your Work
and in Your Life ***
----------------------------------------------------
Written by Spencer Johnson, Kenneth Blanchard
With Who Moved My Cheese? Dr. Spencer Johnson realizes the need for finding the language
and tools to deal with change--an issue that makes all of us nervous and uncomfortable.
Most people are fearful of change because they don't believe they have any control over
how or when it happens to them. Since change happens either to the individual or by the
individual, Spencer Johnson shows us that what matters most is the attitude we have about
change.
With the approach of the year 2000, most work environments are finally recognizing the
urgent need to get their computers and other business systems up to speed and able to deal
with unprecedented change. What businesses are only just beginning to realize is that this
is not enough: we need to help people get ready, too.
Spencer Johnson has created his new book to do just that. The coauthor of the multimillion
bestseller The One Minute Manager has written a deceptively simple story with a
dramatically important message that can radically alter the way we cope with change. Who
Moved My Cheese? allows for common themes to become topics for discussion and individual
interpretation. Who Moved My Cheese? takes the fear and anxiety out of managing the future
and shows people a simple way to successfully deal with the changing times, providing them
with a method for moving ahead with their work and lives safely and effectively.

*** BRIEF NEWS OF THE WORLD ***
-----------------------------------------------------.
POSITIVE NEWS OF THE WEEK
-Doctors Without Borders won the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in recognition of the
organization's "pioneering humanitarian work on several continents," the
Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
-Two young pilot whales, washed up on a Cape Cod beach in June and then nursed back to
health by Mystic Aquarium scientists, will be released into the Atlantic Ocean off Rhode
Island next week.
-Wild tiger numbers around the world are increasing and things are beginning to look a
little bit brighter for the threatened felines. At one point, many scientists predicted
that the tiger would be extinct by the year 2000. Tiger experts today, who recently met at
a workshop hosted by the Wildlife Conservation Society, confirm that tiger populations are
actually growing in some core areas.
-The Grand Canyon will have cleaner air in the future thanks to a settlement reached Oct.
6 between three environmental groups and the owners of the Mohave Power Plant in Laughlin,
Nevada.
OTHER NEWS
-Earlier this week, the world's population passed the six billion mark.
-Drought didn't spoil all fall's colors. Despite the summer drought that turned leaves
brown, much of New England is awash in fall colors. But some are grumbling that the
hues are duller than usual.
-Alcohol, drugs contributed to Shatner death. William Shatner's late wife, Nerine, was
legally drunk and had Valium in her system when she died, according to the finding of the
Los Angeles medical examiner's autopsy report, issued Tuesday.
-Bring on the epidural. More women are opting for pain relief during labor and delivery.
Doctors say they have refined painkilling techniques, and women are feeling less pressure
from society to tough out the pain.
