Dreams and How They Unlock Your Heart's Desire

What is the symbolism behind my dream?

People ask me this question all the time and usually with a hint of desperation and intrigue in their voice. The question is always prompted by a very moving dream, sometimes by one that is very frightening.

Dreams have fascinated me ever since I was a child. I had vivid dreams at night, sometimes calling out to my parents who would come to my bedside and remind me that it was just a dream. These constant dreams prompted me to seek out answers, and so many times, I would stay after school at the library researching and reading dream books. My fascination of course led me to study the mind, and it wasn't until I started doing meditation and then working with my heart that things really started to make sense.

What I came to find out is that dreams are full of signs and symbols and what's more, they help guide us on our journey. A dream is a direct message being communicated from our spirit, and as I always say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." The reason we dream is because we are not seeing or hearing what we need to be seeing or hearing in our waking lives. So, our spirit sends out a "little movie" in the night, when we are most relaxed. This means that our mind and our heart are working together as one to try to help us expand. A dream simply reveals where you are at and where you want to be in one perfect scene or picture.

Within these "little movies," are an assortment of signs and symbols. These messages carry with them, the ability to reach into the depths of our very hearts and reveal deep truths of emotion, consciousness, and soul in a way nothing else can. And what's more, these powerful revelations are the force that lets us SEE that there are things we should change. Our dreams become the catalyst for change in one's soul and psyche if we so allow ;-)

In your waking life, signs are all around you that help you along your journey. Some are simply placed there for your safety. Think of a stop sign on the side of a road. This is a sign that serves us all as drivers, indicating that one should stop one's automobile at an intersection. This sign is not magical, but we all agree that it’s there to provide us with a simple message to stop.

Now, let’s say that you have a dream in which you are driving along a dark road and a very large stop sign appears. Maybe you ignore the sign and drive on and find that the road turns into a huge cliff. Simply put, your mind and your heart are communicating to you. The only way to understand the dream is to take a look at what’s going on in the present moment in your real life (how your mind sees it) and where you want to be (what your heart wants). Perhaps in real life, you have a big decision to make and you are moving forward with the decision even though it feels wrong. You continue “driving” towards that bad decision instead of heeding the warning “to STOP!” In this case, your heart knows better, but your mind is insistent on proceeding. This is a pretty obvious metaphor that you need to STOP and pay attention! By listening to that one message, which is a very clear message from your spirit, you can alter your very existence, ensuring that you are living a heart based life!

What I have found is that dreams are perfect pictures coming directly from our spirit. The signs and symbols are literally screaming out, "I can't tell it to you, so I have to show it to you!" Dreams are a beautiful gift, bestowed upon us each night. They are rich in color and imagery and complex in the language that they offer to us. They are an extraordinary way that our mind and heart work together to offer us aide along our path.
