There are so many options when it comes to creating online businesses that many people are either so overwhelmed they don’t know where to start or they feel like they don’t have what it takes to compete with established businesses. I’m not saying this process will be easy, but there is one way to get past having to compete with established online businesses. The concept is called niche marketing and it’s the best way to get out into the online business by being able to market your services or product in new and unique ways.

The basic idea behind niche marketing goes in the opposite direction of mainstream marketing. Instead of trying to appeal to the masses, niche marketers instead find a very specific group of people who have a need that it not currently being met. Yes, niche marketers have a considerable smaller customer base, but they will often have loyal customers because they know where to go to get what they want.

If you aren’t sure if your product or service could fit into a niche, think about it this way. The market for your product is like a grapefruit. There is a large circle of people who might be interested in your product or service, but this larger group can be divided into segments and each segment has specific needs differing from the other segments. If you can identify these needs, you can alter your product or service to meet these needs.

How can this be done? Perhaps you want to market baby products. This is a huge market and it would be difficult to break into the “general baby product” market and compete with the large companies already out there. By looking at the possible segments of this market, however, you could find numerous groups of parents whose needs aren’t being met by mainstream stores such as parents of preemies, parents of special needs babies, parents of multiples or parents wanting all natural or organic products. Yes, it might take a little work on your part to research the need and find solutions to the problem, but in the end if you have a successful business, word will spread and people who have the need you cater to will soon flock to your store.

Finally, the most important thing to remember about niche marketing is that the customer base is small so it is essential to provide exceptional customer service to ensure repeat business and referrals so that they can soon rise to the top of their niche.
