Our bodies are 50 to 70 percent water (about 10 to 12 gallons). Males generally have more body water than females because they tend to have less body fat. Water is also found in blood (83 percent), muscle (73 percent), fat (25 percent), and bone (22 percent).

Water is essential for many ongoing chemical reactions in the body. It helps regulate body temperature through perspiration, transports nutrients and other substances throughout the body, aids digestion, carries away waste in the sweat and urine, and lubricates the joints.

The average adult needs 8 to 12 glasses of water daily for optimal health. This will replace water that is lost every day (10 cups) through perspiration, urination, respiration, and bowel movements. Fluid needs are also dependent on the calorie intake. The human body requires about one quart of water for every 1,000 calories consumed.

Thirst is the body’s way of saying that you need water. But it is not a reliable indicator since experts say that there is already slight dehydration by the time you get thirsty. Because of this, you should drink plenty of water daily from a variety of foods and beverages.
