Has anyone ever told you that you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

As a child I didn’t really understand why I couldn’t have my cake and eat it too. Every year for my birthday I’d get a cake and I’d actually eat it.

You know, when people ask me what I do, I say, “Whatever I want.” Not because I’m a trust fund baby with no responsibilities. On the contrary, I’m a divorced, single mother. I’m the sole income earner for my family. Two and a half years ago, I lost everything I owned in Hurricane Katrina. And since then, I’ve had a more phenomenal life that I ever did before the storm, a life of massive abundance and joy.

I truly believe we are put here to experience joy. Not because we have “earned” it, or we are deserving. But because we are human. And we get to say how it goes here on this planet.

You can have anything you want.

I’d like to share with you three simple ingredients to kick-start a life of having your cake and eating it too.

Ingredient #1: Clear Your Plate

Now I would imagine that most of you are familiar with the Secret and the Law of Attraction, right? Remember, thoughts become things? Well, no matter how much thinking and believing you are doing, if “stuff” is in the way, you have no place to put your greatest desires.

The first ingredient to laying the foundation for massive abundance, joy and having it all is to make space on your plate for a piece of cake.

How? you ask. Look at the distractions. They are all around you in the form of activities, material items, people, thoughts, beliefs, lies told, words unspoken, flat tires, etc.

Anything that is taking up space in your mind and is not aligned with your integrity is out-of-synch. And, worse, cluttering up your life.

Do you owe someone money? Acknowledge the fact and set up a repayment plan, even if it’s only $10/month until paid.

Is there someone you are avoiding? Someone you had a fight with way back when? Call them up and say, “I’m sorry.” Mean it, and you will find momentum pushing you forward in a way more powerful then you even imagined.

Action: Ask yourself this simple question, “what distracts me from having everything I want?” Then be quiet and let your mind take over. Grab a paper and pen and write down every thought that comes to mind, even if the answer sounds silly to you.

When you are done, evaluate your list and pick the distraction with the most bang. Then do something about it.

Ingredient #2: Change Your Conversation

Many of us have little stories running around in our head. We are pretending that we can’t have what we want.

Declare today:
“I am done pretending I can't have what I want. I love myself too much and I love the people in my life too much.”

When we break old patterns and old conversations and say something new, new things happen and life alters.

One day I said, I want to spend 50% of my time on vacation. I had no idea how I would do that, especially since I’d lost my income and contemplated filing for bankruptcy. Twelve months later, I realized I had spent half my year traveling and vacationing and doing whatever I wanted. Now, it’s a way of life for me. And I made it happen because I shifted my beliefs, cleaned my plate, and said something I had never said before.

Action: Take a look? What could you say that you’ve never said before? Something that would push you beyond your comfort zone, onto the skinny branches of life, perhaps?

Ingredient #3: Act! Act! Act! Act!

To eat a cake you must put the morsel in your mouth and chew, right?

I know life can be overwhelming. There are so many actions to take in a given day. As humans, we love to make it complicated. We make long lists, then create fabulous reasons about why we can’t get to all the tasks on our lists.

Just remember, there is only ever, one thing to do next. That’s it. One action. One step.

So, make your plan, work your plan, and act.

I write books one sentence at a time. I created a multi-million dollar real estate portfolio buying one house at a time. My son learns to read one word at a time. You’d drive across the country one mile at a time. We live life one day at a time.

Action: What is your number one dream? What cake do you want to eat? Take one action each day to forward your life goal. Watch the success roll in.

With consistent development in these three areas, you can have it all. Now, go eat some cake!
