Overcoming procrastination is a challenge. Whether you’re a teen, in your 20s or older, you’re definitely not alone!

Procrastination is a serious problem when it affects the quality of your life. If you’re not getting the things done that would move your life forward, then overcoming procrastination is a must. Choosing not to deal with the habit (or to deal with it later!), leads to low self-esteem, stress, and saying goodbye to some of your dreams right now!

Apply the following tips to help you beat your habit to procrastinate.

3 Tips for Overcoming Procrastination

Redefine what it means to fail: Instead of trying and not getting it right, you may decide to put the task off until you’re more prepared. Trying and not succeeding isn’t a failure. Not trying or giving up definitely is. It may be time for you to re-assess your definition of failure and challenge some of your false beliefs. After all, you can always try again and again until you get it right (just like a video game!).

Feeling overwhelmed: Have too much scheduled? Long, uncontrollable lists can lead to procrastination. I recommend you shorten your ‘to do’ list. If you can’t take any tasks off, then arrange them according to priority. Each day make a list of top 3 things that’ll get done. Once they’re complete scratch them off your long priority list. Scratching things off makes you want to keep going...not procrastinating.

Feeling bored: Goals are important! BUT... Goals become a problem if they don’t inspire you to take action. Re-assess what you’re trying to accomplish. If you’re not excited, you may need to be more discriminating about the activities you’re choosing. Without stimulating goals, tasks become boring and you lose motivation to do them. So, you procrastinate.

Overcoming procrastination can be difficult but not impossible. It takes some effort and self-control. If you’re having a hard time on your own, it may be time to explore other options such as working with a life coach. You have nothing to lose other than your habit to procrastinate.
