This is Part II of the three-part mini-biography of one of the principal research participants who generously contributed his time and insight for this important research into the phenomenon of how prominent successful leaders overcome adversity and obstacles.

This Mark Victor Hansen’s “rags to riches” story:
Part II of Three

Mark was able to finance his both undergraduate and graduate education at Southern Illinois University majoring in philosophy and communications from the money he earned playing in his band he started while he was still in high school. He also became a research assistant to Professor Buckminster Fuller. The late Dr. “Bucky” Fuller was the owner of 2,000 major patents and the author of more than 40 national bestsellers, including Utopia and Oblivion. Mark Victor Hansen said, “He was my intellectual mentor. He [Bucky] taught me to think comprehensively and in anticipation of the future. I learned that if you anticipate problems, you could help solve them. That’s what I wanted to do for humanity.”

One of Dr. Buckminster Fuller’s famous inventions, what some called one of his signature inventions, was the geodesic dome. The commercial building of geodesic domes became the focus of Mark Victor Hansen’s first business venture as an adult. Mark shared his vision about helping to house the world, “I thought I would house humanity with those,” Mark continued to demonstrate his selling skills by selling the domes. He was initially successful and in less than three years Mark’s venture had annual sales of $2 million in the early 1970’s.

Mark Victor Hansen, never saw the coming of the OPEC oil embargo of 1974. Mark’s geodesic domes used polyvinyl chloride, more commonly know as “PVC.” PVC is a petrochemical based product which was now suddenly scarce and it was not available to Mark’s new small PVC geodesic dome operation. Hansen’s supplier diverted Mark’s PVC to their larger customers. Mark was literally out of business overnight while only in his middle twenties. What made matters worse was Mark had personally guaranteed his company’s loans. Therefore both the company and Mark Victor Hansen personally fell into bankruptcy. Mark added, “I lost everything. I couldn’t even afford the $300 needed for a bankruptcy attorney, so I had to represent myself.” Mark specifically commented to me that “I literally had to go to the public library and check out a book on ‘How To Go Bankrupt Without An Attorney’”

Mark Victor Hansen and I discussed my Doctoral research on Leadership and Overcoming Adversity, and specifically the impact of overcoming adversity and obstacles, as well as my research findings. Mark graciously shared his ideas on the importance of overcoming obstacles and specifically about having vision. Mark said, “Solomon said ‘Without vision my people parish’—transliterated that is ‘With vision I flourish.’”

Mark has demonstrated his vision in all he does in his multiple streams of income and what he shares with his audiences. Mark Victor Hansen & Associates web site shares these thoughts, and I wholeheartedly agree: “He [Mark] possesses boundless energy and exuberance travels still further through mediums such as television (Oprah, CNN and The Today Show), print (TIME, US News & World Report, USA Today, The New York Times and Entrepreneur) and countless radio and newspaper interviews as he assures our planet's people that ‘you can easily create the life you deserve.’”

Mark Victor Hansen has been one of my writing and speaking mentors for many years, and I am blessed to have him as my friend, enlightened guru, and mentor. I invite my article readers, looking to be uplifted and touched at a “soulular” level to buy, read, and enjoy a copy of one of over 100 Chicken Soup for the Soul books, or The Power of Focus, The Aladdin Factor, or Dare to Win all by Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield.

For my SelfGrowth.com article readers who are interested in becoming “Enlightened Millionaires” — I suggest that buy, read and then put into action the ideas found in "The One Minute Millionaire: The Enlightened Way to Wealth," "Cracking the Millionaire Code," or their newest best-selling book, "Cash in a Flash" by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen.
