In spite of abundant, nearly overwhelming evidence that soy, as a food, is a direct path to a myriad of health disasters, the edible oil industry continues to pour millions into marketing the faulty concept that soy products are safe, healthful foods. And they don't mind whom they recruit to help propagate the fiction. Among other prestigious endorsements they've purchased with their largesse is none other than the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The AAP states categorically that soy formulas are safe and effective for infants. For other young children, the contention is that soy beverages have been shown to have positive effects on cholesterol levels in overweight children, and may improve the lung function in children and adults with asthma. Research, they continue, shows no hormonal effects from the long term feeding of soy products. But an examination of the track record of the AAP in favoring commercially motivated health concepts will quickly raise high suspicions as to the validity of their statements.
A QUESTIONABLE TRACK RECORD
The American Academy of Pediatrics is the same organization that advocates cholesterol screening for infants as young as two and placing those with elevated cholesterol levels on statin drugs beginning immediately and continuing through life. The AAP has also endorsed the abomination of inoculating pre-teen girls with Gardasil for the dubious purpose of possibly avoiding cervical cancer later in life. Roundly ignored has been the generous gift basket of side effects that come with Gardasil; facial paralysis, Guillain-Barr Syndrome, severe allergic reactions, bloodclots, severe abdominal pain, miscarriages, and a more than significant number of deaths. Relying on the endorsements of anyone with such a track record would certainly seem foolhardy and it begs the question, just what are the facts about soy?
SIMPLY PUT, SOY IS UNFIT TO EAT
Around the turn of the last century and for years beyond, soy was considered unfit to eat. Its principle use was as a crop rotator. Soy has the strong ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, while the natural insecticides it contains make it impervious to destruction by pests. Then the soy producers associations, looking to expand their markets for soy products began heavy marketing campaigns. Today the soy producers collectively spend more than $80 million dollars annually on marketing efforts. And we're daily being bombarded with the propaganda about how good soy is for us. They are fully aware of the negatives in their products and have worked very hard at eliminating them, but no matter how hard they try, they are unable to fully eliminate the anti- nutrients soy products contain.
- Soy contains gastrogens; substances that suppress the thyroid function.
- Soy has one of the highest percentages of contamination by pesticides of any food.
- Soybeans contain hemaglutin, a clot promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together
- Soy interferes with calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron absorption.
- Soy has the highest level of phytic acid of any grain or legume, and phytic acid blocks the absorption of essential minerals in the intestinal tract.
- Soy feeding in infancy has been linked to diabetes. In 1986, before its apparently cash motivated turnabout, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised against the use of soy formula due to the diabetes risk.
INFANTS ARE MOST VULNERABLE
Soy foods are not appropriate foods for infants or children; not tofu, not soy milk, not soy formula, not soy hot dogs, not soy burgers, or any other soy food products. Soy formula feeding is associated with thyroid disease and hormone disruption. Some researchers are concerned that soy formula given to infants can disrupt hormones at a crucial time for the programming of a baby's reproductive development. Some scientists are genuinely fearful that, since the soy estrogens will occupy the receptor sites for testosterone, appropriate development may not take place, affecting the sexual orientation of the child in future years.
Probably the most serious argument against soy is its use in infant formulas. Mary G Enig, Ph. D., president of the Maryland Nutritionist's Association, contends that The amount of phytoestrogens in a day's worth of soy infant formula is equal to 5 birth control pills." Such dosage of estrogens in infancy is believed to be associated with early puberty in girls and retarded physical maturation in boys.
Dr Enig goes on to say that while soybeans are high in protein, they are a poor source for it because many proteins found in soybeans are potent enzyme inhibitors. These are so called anti-nutrients that block the digestion of the desirable proteins. Dr Lon White of the Hawaii Center for Health Research suggests that isoflavones in tofu and other soy foods may very well interfere with the brain's "long term transpotentiation," a critical mechanism of memory formation.
HORMONE DISRUPTION DURING PREGNANCY
Hormone disruption brought on by the consumption of soy products can have a devastating effect on the developing brain of a fetus, especially during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy when the fetus depends on the mother's thyroid hormones for brain development. A 1999 study publlished in the New England Journal of Medicine showed clearly that pregnant women with underactive thyroids were four times more likely to have children with lower IQs.
The arguments against the consumption of soy products as food can go on to fill volumes. As time goes on, the truth about soy will be brought to light and the fraud that is being perpetrated by the massive soy industry will begin to emerge. Meanwhile it's in the best interest of all of us to stay away from soy products as food and hopefully the soy bean will one day be again employed in the job it does best - revitalizing depleted soil
